I’m No Longer a College Student…

So I dropped out of college! It was a decision long awaiting, but I did it and I am much better for it. When I started my junior year at a new college, I was ambitious and focused. I joined clubs and worked as a student worker on campus. However, over time, I found myself drawing away. I commuted 5 days a week for over an hour and had extended nights with Greek life as a pledge, being on campus some days between 8 am to 9 at night (and then having an 8 am again the next day). I found myself hating the drive and then slowly my classes and the hard work I needed to put in. I became less interested in my academics and more focused on Greek life or club activities or my job. This grew over time and then I found my future husband. I realized that I don’t want college and that I would rather just work or be a homemaker over a career right now and so I withdrew in December. If Lana from high school knew this, she would drop dead of a heart attack. Mind you, I was the class Salutatorian and now I’m a girl who got a .55 GPA and is a drop out.

So what am I doing now?

Currently, I am starting a job at a publishing house and I am enjoying time with my future husband. I’m learning new recipes and re-learning to love writing and reading. I am learning to live more stress-free. I feel free from the stress of college and while I do plan on going back eventually, I feel confident knowing I’ll do it on my own time when it is right.

So if you were questioning dropping, I wouldn’t say “yes, totally do it” but rather “why.” Before I officially withdrew, I had a contingency plan to work and save money and take time to enjoy life as a young adult. You don’t need college to succeed, but make sure this is a decision you know you’ll have peace from afterwards. For me, I felt like a weight had been lifted off of my chest right after signing the forms. If you are partially unsure, consider taking a temporary leave if your college has it. Take off one semester, without officially and totally withdrawing, and do something. Travel, work, enjoy life…it can look different for each person. But I would recommend taking a breather. As someone who loved school and academics at one point, it is okay to feel burdened and it is okay to burnt out. Sending my love to all and I hope this post can help some of you who are starting up this semester! #collegelife #collegedropout #studentlifestyle #thingsiwishiknew

2024/1/22 Edited to

... Read moreDropping out of college is often seen as a drastic decision, but for many, it’s a step towards self-discovery and finding a path that fits better with their goals and mental health. From my experience, one of the most significant challenges was balancing intense academic demands with extracurriculars and long commutes, which eventually led to burnout. If you’re facing similar struggles, it’s helpful to consider alternatives like taking a semester off or a leave of absence to recharge rather than fully withdrawing immediately. I found that having a contingency plan before making this decision was crucial. Starting a job at a publishing house has allowed me to explore new passions and redefine my ambitions outside the traditional academic route. This transition gave me the freedom to enjoy personal interests and relationships, such as spending time with my future husband and rekindling my love for writing and cooking. For those wondering about life after college—success isn’t limited to a university degree. Many paths lead to fulfilling careers and happiness. Planning a future that aligns with your personal values and mental well-being can be much more rewarding than following a preset academic track that doesn’t fit. Taking time to understand your needs, exploring job opportunities, and building skills outside the classroom can prepare you for a stable, balanced career when you’re ready. Lastly, don’t hesitate to seek support—whether from friends, family, or counseling services. The decision to leave college might feel isolating, but sharing your feelings and plans helps maintain confidence and clarity. Remember, it’s okay to redefine what success means for you and take control of your own journey on your terms.

Honestly good for you. I'm not sure why everyone in the comments is making it seem like college is the only way to be successful 😭 My brother never went to uni and he makes over six figs as a chef in a high end restaurant. A family friend is a realtor and she's happy & thriving.
