Happy 11th Birthday to my beautiful baby girl. 💫

Your smile shines with so much of your daddy’s light, even on the days he’s not here to see it.

We celebrate you today, but we also hold space for what’s missing. For the hugs he would’ve given, the jokes he would’ve told, and the proud look he would’ve had watching you grow.

You are brave. You are love in motion.

And I know he’s with us in every single moment. 💙

... Read moreCelebrating a child’s birthday after the loss of a parent is a uniquely bittersweet experience. As a solo parent, I’ve learned that these milestones aren't just about marking another year; they're about navigating a delicate balance of joy, remembrance, and sometimes, profound sorrow. When my daughter turned 11, it was no different. Her smile, a beacon of her dad's spirit, reminded me of all the laughter and love he would have brought to this day. One of the most important things I've found is to acknowledge the absence, rather than try to gloss over it. While we focus on creating new, happy memories, we also make space for her dad. This could be anything from sharing favorite stories about him over breakfast to lighting a special candle in his honor. For her 11th birthday, we looked through old photo albums, giggling at his funny expressions and remembering his unique way of making every moment an adventure. It’s a way to keep his presence alive, not as a source of sadness, but as a cherished part of our family's story. It’s also crucial to give yourself, the solo parent, grace on these days. The emotional labor of holding space for joy while simultaneously managing grief can be exhausting. I've learned to lean on my support system, whether it's friends, family, or even online communities of other widowed parents. On days like birthdays, where emotions run high, having someone to share the load, even if it's just for a quiet chat, makes a world of difference. It's okay to feel overwhelmed, and it's okay to let others help carry you through. Encouraging your child to express their feelings, whatever they may be, is another vital step. My daughter knows it's okay to miss her dad, even on her birthday. Sometimes that means a quiet moment of reflection, other times it's a burst of tears. I try to validate those feelings, letting her know that love and loss can coexist. We talk about how her dad would be incredibly proud of the brave, loving girl she's becoming, and how his light continues to shine through her in so many beautiful ways. It’s a continuous conversation, evolving as she grows and understands more about grief and memory. Ultimately, these birthdays become powerful tributes. They aren't just celebrations of another year of life; they are celebrations of resilience, remembrance, and the enduring power of family love, even across dimensions. Every year, as I watch her grow, I see not just her future unfolding, but also the beautiful legacy her dad left behind, honored and cherished in every single moment.
