Southern Smothered Cabbage with Shrimp & Sausage Bowl
Ingredients
Green cabbage, chopped (1 medium head)
Large shrimp, peeled and deveined (10–12)
Smoked sausage or andouille, sliced (1–2 links)
Onion, sliced (1 large)
Red bell pepper, diced (1)
Garlic, minced (3 cloves)
Chicken broth (1–2 cups)
Paprika (1 tsp)
Cajun seasoning (1–2 tsp)
Black pepper (to taste)
Salt (to taste)
Olive oil or butter (2–3 tbsp)
Cooked white rice (for serving)
Instructions
1. Heat oil or butter in a large pan. Add sliced sausage and sear until browned. Remove and set aside.
2. Add onions, bell pepper, and garlic to the same pan. Sauté until soft and fragrant.
3. Add chopped cabbage and season with salt, pepper, paprika, and Cajun seasoning. Sauté until cabbage begins to wilt.
4. Pour in chicken broth and cover. Simmer 15–20 minutes until cabbage is tender.
5. Add the browned sausage back into the pan. Stir well.
6. Season shrimp and sauté in a separate pan until pink and lightly browned, then fold them gently into the cabbage mixture.
7. Simmer everything together for 5 minutes to blend flavors.
8. Serve in a bowl with a mound of white rice in the center, spooning the cabbage, sausage, and broth around it.
