The Charleston Riot Of 1919 Remembered
On May 10, 1919, Charleston, South Carolina became one of the first warning signs of what would later be called the Red Summer. White sailors and civilians attacked Black residents, homes, and businesses, turning one night into a painful reminder of how Black communities were targeted even after serving, working, building, and surviving in this country. This history is heavy, but it deserves to be remembered clearly, not softened or buried.

Having studied the Charleston Riot of 1919 and its context within the Red Summer, I’ve found that understanding this tragic event deepens our appreciation for the resilience of Black communities in America. The riot was not an isolated incident, but part of a nationwide wave of racial violence targeting Black veterans, workers, and families who had just served their country or were building lives in increasingly hostile environments. One aspect that often goes under-discussed is the psychological toll on survivors and their descendants. The fear that spread through neighborhoods like those on King Street and around the Navy Yard in Charleston was palpable. Black-owned businesses such as the Lumpkin Grocery and Coleman & Son General Merchandise were not only economic hubs but also community anchors. Their destruction was an assault on progress and safety. Personally, learning about these targeted attacks and the courage of those who endured them has made me reflect on how history shapes present struggles for equality and justice. The Charleston riot reminds us that Black Americans' fight for dignity didn't end after military service overseas; it continued fiercely on home soil, often against violent resistance. It’s essential to keep these stories alive and visible—not diluted or hidden—so communities today can draw strength and lessons from the past. The Charleston Riot and the Red Summer at large are sobering reminders of the systemic challenges Black people have faced, which persist in various forms today. Recognizing these events with honesty aids in fostering dialogue and healing. In sharing this knowledge, I hope readers appreciate why May 10, 1919, should be remembered as a powerful warning from history. Preserving this memory helps honor those who lived through the violence and those who continue the struggle for racial justice in Charleston and beyond.
