Miami Reached Its Breaking Point
On May 17, 1980, Miami erupted after an all-white jury acquitted officers connected to the fatal beating of Arthur McDuffie, a 33-year-old Black insurance executive, former Marine, and father. McDuffie had first been reported as injured in a motorcycle crash, but evidence later showed he had been beaten after a police chase.
The verdict became the spark in a city already carrying deep frustration. Liberty City and Overtown became the center of days of unrest that left 18 people dead, hundreds injured, and Miami permanently scarred. Arthur McDuffie’s story was never just about one verdict. It was about a man whose life mattered, and a community that felt the system had turned away.
