Reading and writing progress check-in

Almost finished with writing the backstory for my witch cult leader. I didn't do this until after I was already a hundred pages in my first draft, but she was so mysterious, even to me 😅 but I'm having so much fun with it, and I can't wait to write back stories for all her members too.

Finished Severance. 5⭐

Started reading The Testaments by Margaret Atwood and The Psychology of Money

... Read moreThis weekly progress check highlights a key phase in the creative writing process: developing deep character backstories after significant drafting, which adds depth and consistency to storytelling. Crafting the backstory of a mysterious witch cult leader not only enriches character complexity but also enhances plot development, making the narrative more engaging. Additionally, the author’s reading selections impact their writing and thinking. Finishing "Severance," a 5-star rated book, signals exposure to innovative storytelling techniques, possibly inspiring narrative style or themes. Starting "The Testaments" by Margaret Atwood introduces readers to dystopian and feminist themes, often exploring societal structures, which can inform nuanced character motivations. Reading "The Psychology of Money" offers insights into behavioral economics and personal finance psychology, useful for realistically portraying characters’ motivations and decisions. Tracking word counts—2,271 words written this week, totaling 5,303—reflects disciplined writing habits essential for completing first drafts. Balancing writing with reading diverse genres broadens the author’s perspective, supporting content richness and creativity. For writers and readers, this blend of progress monitoring, varied reading, and character deepening provides a useful model for enhancing one’s craft. Engaging with books across fiction and nonfiction not only fuels inspiration but also builds authoritative knowledge, enriching storytelling quality. Emphasizing regular progress checks promotes accountability and measurable advancement toward writing goals, a key element in sustained creative endeavors.
