... Read moreHey everyone! As someone who's been on a journey to rebuild core strength after experiencing diastasis recti, I know how overwhelming it can feel to find safe and effective exercises. It's not just about looking good; it's about feeling strong and supported from the inside out. The 4 core exercises shared in the main post – Standing Marches, Flutterkicks, Single Leg Standing Marches, and Bear Hold Dumbbell Pass – are fantastic starting points for strengthening your abdominal wall. But I wanted to share a bit more about how to maximize your recovery and add a few extra foundational movements that have made a huge difference for me. First, let's quickly touch on what diastasis recti actually is. It's the separation of your "six-pack" muscles, often happening during or after pregnancy, or from intense abdominal pressure. You can often check for it yourself: lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat. Place your fingers just above your belly button, lift your head and shoulders slightly (as if doing a mini-crunch). If you feel a gap or "trench" where your fingers sink in, that's likely DR. The key is to focus on engaging your deep core muscles, especially your transverse abdominis, to help gently bring those muscles back together and provide internal support. Beyond the excellent routine of Standing Marches and Flutterkicks mentioned, I've found two other exercises to be incredibly beneficial, especially when starting out or looking for modifications. Heel Slides: This is a gentle yet powerful exercise for establishing core stability. Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat. Engage your deep core by drawing your belly button gently towards your spine without tilting your pelvis. Then, slowly slide one heel away from your body, extending your leg while keeping your core engaged and lower back stable. Only extend as far as you can without your back arching. Alternate legs. This helps you connect with your transverse abdominis, which is crucial for diastasis recti safe core exercise. Dead Bug Diastasis Recti Modification: The traditional dead bug can be tricky with DR, but a modified version is a gem for progression. Again, lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat, core engaged. Instead of extending both arm and leg, start by just extending one arm overhead while keeping your core super stable. Then try alternating legs, tapping your heel to the floor. The key is slow, controlled movement with absolute core connection. This helps build strength and coordination without putting undue pressure on your abdominal wall. It's a fantastic way to progress your core workouts for diastasis recti. Remember, the goal isn't just to do the exercises; it's to do them *mindfully*. Focus on your breath – exhaling as you exert, inhaling as you return. This helps activate your pelvic floor and deep core. For those who are postpartum, especially post C-section, incorporating pelvic floor exercises is non-negotiable. They work hand-in-hand with your core to provide comprehensive support. Consistency is really important when you're trying to fix diastasis recti. Even short, daily sessions can be more effective than sporadic long ones. And while these 4 Core Exercises and additional tips are great, always listen to your body. If something causes pain or makes your belly "dome" or "cone," stop immediately. Consulting a pelvic floor physical therapist or a certified trainer specializing in DR is always recommended for personalized guidance, especially if you have severe diastasis recti or are unsure about your form. They can provide real diastasis recti pictures and specific progressions tailored to you. There are even diastasis recti exercises apps that can guide you, but nothing beats professional advice. I hope these insights add a valuable layer to your core strengthening journey! Keep at it, and celebrate every small step towards a stronger, more stable core.

Did you know …………….if you tempo regulate your exercise moves, using music or a metronome, You will take your entire work out to the next level in less time with less risk of injury than working at your own pace regardless of which moves you push Because it’s not what you do, but how you do them that matters most. —Polykinetics (since 2014) created by a neurodivergent mom
