8 things I did in Paris and how much they cost!

2025/2/14 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! So glad you're looking into studying in Paris – it was truly an unforgettable experience for me. Beyond the amazing budget-friendly activities I shared earlier, like admiring the illuminated Eiffel Tower sparkling at night or exploring Notre Dame and Shakespeare and Co. for free, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into the practicalities of student life here. Because let's be real, studying abroad is about more than just sightseeing; it's about living like a local! Finding Your Home Away From Home: One of the first things you’ll tackle is accommodation. Paris rent can be steep, but there are options! Look into student residences (like CROUS if you qualify, though spots are competitive), private student housing companies, or even flat-sharing with other students. Facebook groups for Parisians and expats are goldmines for finding roommates. Start early, and be prepared for small spaces – it’s part of the Parisian charm! Navigating the City Like a Pro: Getting around is super easy with Paris's extensive public transport. As a student, definitely get a Navigo pass. It's a monthly or weekly pass for unlimited travel on the metro, bus, RER, and tram. It saves a ton of money compared to individual tickets. But honestly, my favorite way to experience Paris was walking. It’s free, you discover hidden gems, and you get to truly soak in the atmosphere. Plus, it helps offset all those delicious pastries! Eating Well on a Budget: Forget eating out every night unless you've got a generous scholarship! Supermarkets like Monoprix, Carrefour, and Franprix are your best friends. Explore local markets for fresh produce – they're often cheaper and a fantastic cultural experience. Look for student deals at university cafeterias (CROUS restaurants offer incredibly affordable meals). Treat yourself occasionally to a hot chocolate at a charming cafe (maybe not Carette every day, but find a local spot!) or a casual crêpe from a street vendor. Picnics by the Seine or in a park like Luxembourg Gardens are also a student staple and a great way to enjoy the city views. Embracing the Language (or not!): While many Parisians, especially younger ones, speak English, making an effort with French goes a long way. Even a few basic phrases like 'Bonjour', 'Merci', 'S'il vous plaît' can open doors and improve your experience. Many universities offer language exchange programs or free French classes for international students. Don't be afraid to practice – Parisians appreciate the effort! Building Your Social Circle: Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Join university clubs, participate in orientation events, and don't shy away from social gatherings. There are also many expat groups and meetups in Paris that can help you connect with others. I found that shared experiences, whether it was exploring the Louvre together or going to a jazz club for a cheap night out, were fantastic ways to bond. Beyond Sightseeing: Making Paris Your Classroom: While the sights are breathtaking (I mean, who doesn't love getting lost in Galeries Lafayette or seeing the Arc de Triomphe?), remember you're also there to study! Utilize the incredible libraries, find a favorite café to work in, and immerse yourself in your courses. Paris itself is a living classroom, and balancing your studies with exploring its wonders is key to a truly enriching study abroad experience. Good luck, future Parisian students!

What It Cost Me to Learn This
