I’m newly engaged, this is supposed to be a fun and happy time in my life. It’s quickly turning into a nightmare and I need some advice.
I dove right into planning and started thinking of when we’d like to have the wedding. I’ve always dreamed of a fall wedding but didn’t want to wait till 2027. So I found a venue that I fell in love with for fall 2026, apparently my parents hate my decision. I want a food truck for my reception, I love the idea of it and I am so excited! My fiancé’s dad knows a guy and got us a good deal so we went for it. Once again, my parents hate my decision.
This has turned into a war almost. They say I haven’t included them in the planning … but I actually have. My dad and my fiancé got into an argument before us getting engaged so technically he didn’t get his blessing and I know that’s a big part of my dad’s attitude. They both want the other to reach out first but they both won’t be the bigger person and do it. Not even for me. My dad is starting to be hurtful towards me that I’m throwing my life away and I’m being insensitive to my family and making a mistake marrying him bc he’s not good enough for me. He never will be.
I’m now at the point where I don’t want to plan this wedding and either want to elope, which I feel will make things worse and it’s not what I really want. OR. Just push the wedding to spring or fall 2027 to give us time to figure things out. It’s just not apart of my plan so I don’t want to change anything but at the same time I can’t take this anymore.
Just looking for some outside advice or if anyone can relate.
... Read morePlanning a wedding can be one of the most joyful yet stressful times in a person’s life, especially when complicated family dynamics come into play. When tensions arise around decisions such as venue, date, or unique elements like a food truck reception, it’s important to balance your personal desires with family sentiments while maintaining your peace of mind.
If you find yourself in conflict with your parents or other relatives, the first step is open, honest communication. It’s essential to express your feelings calmly and listen to theirs without judgment. Sometimes, parents’ resistance stems from their emotional investments or misunderstandings about your choices rather than a desire to control. Acknowledging their concerns doesn’t mean you must change your plans but shows you value their perspective.
Considering your fiancé’s relationship with your family is crucial. Past arguments or lack of blessings can create emotional hurdles, but working towards mutual respect benefits everyone. Encouraging your father and fiancé to communicate—perhaps with your mediation or the help of a neutral third party—might defuse hostility. Remember, it’s okay to set boundaries to protect your mental health.
Regarding timing, postponing your wedding may provide breathing room for healing strained relationships and more thoughtful planning. While it’s natural to want a particular season or year, flexibility can reduce pressure and improve the overall experience.
Alternatively, if traditional planning becomes overwhelming, discuss elopement cautiously with your partner. It might ease family tension temporarily but could create new conflicts if not handled sensitively. Whatever you choose, focus on what feels authentic and joyful to both of you.
Lastly, seek support beyond your immediate family. Friends or online communities can offer empathy and diverse perspectives. Professional counseling may also help navigate emotional complexities around commitment and family acceptance.
Remember, your wedding is ultimately a celebration of your love and partnership. Prioritize what brings you happiness, communicate thoughtfully, and give yourself grace through this challenging but meaningful journey.
Sweetheart I’m so sorry you are going through this. First you are getting married congratulations 🍾 so happy and excited for yall. It’s time to put your big girl pants on and put yourself first. You can maybe talk to your dad and tell him how much this is hurting you and that it’s about you and your future. When you get married you are essentially becoming one so if you are not ready for that then don’t because you will have to put your husband first after God it’ll never work if not he will be your family. I’m sorry I got married a 7 years ago and my dad and we I were not speaking at the time so he did not walk me down the aisle was I sad yes did I do it yes. But that is also me I cut toxic people out (long story) any how maybe also talk to your fiancé and try to change his mind and reach out to your dad. If you are sure that he is your future. He should want you to have the best day of your life. Please don’t take this personal this is just my opinion and nothing else. Just that I went through something similar is all. Also maybe you should wait until 2027 unless you’re in a hurry. 🤷🏻♀️ I know I changed my date several times but there was other reasons I did that. Much love and blessings to you and your future. Good luck I hope you can work everything out with your family. 🍋🍋❤️
