I was taught creationism as science.

Not theology. Not “this is what our family believes.” Science.

When I entered public school, I found myself writing the scientifically accepted answers on tests while putting what Apologia had taught me in the margins, because I genuinely thought accepting evolution or an old Earth meant rejecting God.

That conflict stayed with me for years and was part of why I became agnostic for a while.

In this video, I go back through the creationist science I was taught, the problems with how radiometric dating was presented, the circular logic used to protect a predetermined conclusion, and what the scientific method actually does when evidence doesn’t fit expectations.

I also talk about what changed when I studied Islam, especially the Qur’anic idea that messengers were sent to many different peoples throughout history, how archaeology shows older civilizations with overlapping religious traditions, and where the evidence stops and faith begins.

I’m Muslim, and I believe Islam is true. But I don’t think science has to be manipulated to prove that.

I can believe the Earth is ancient.

I can accept evolution.

I can follow archaeology where the evidence leads.

And I can still believe in a Creator.

Maybe the real falsehood I had to unlearn was the idea that I ever had to choose between science and God.

... Read moreGrowing up, I also experienced the struggle of reconciling deeply held religious beliefs with scientifically accepted facts like evolution and the Earth's ancient age. It’s common for many to be taught a specific worldview that implicitly or explicitly frames science as opposing faith, making acceptance of scientific evidence feel like spiritual betrayal. What stood out most in my experience, as echoed here, is how important it is to critically evaluate the scientific claims presented to us, including recognizing when assumptions might be misrepresented to protect doctrinal conclusions. Radiometric dating, for example, is often misunderstood or misinterpreted in ways that bolster preconceived beliefs rather than reflect scientific consensus. Real science embraces inquiry, acknowledges uncertainty, and adapts conclusions based on evidence rather than starting from fixed interpretations. Another powerful insight is how expanding one’s faith framework can help bridge gaps between science and spirituality. For this author, studying Islam and its teachings on messengers and revelation allowed a broader understanding of religious history and culture that does not conflict with science but can coexist with it. This approach dissolves the false binary that we must choose between God or scientific truth. I have found that embracing the complexity of history, archaeology, and biology enriches faith by framing it as a meaningful response to existence rather than a rigid set of scientific claims to defend. Whether it’s understanding the shared stories in ancient cultures or seeing the universe's vast timeline, science provides a fascinating context where faith can still thrive on questions beyond its scope—purpose, intention, and ultimate meaning. For anyone navigating this path, remember that faith and reason are not mutually exclusive. Science explains processes and mechanisms; faith addresses why existence and consciousness might be here at all. Bringing these perspectives into dialogue rather than opposition offers a balanced and fulfilling way to honor both one’s religious beliefs and appreciation for scientific discovery.
