Are you making these mistakes?

Learning piano isn’t just about memorizing notes, it’s about how you play them.

Many students, even after years of lessons, struggle with habits that hold them back without realizing it.

Here are the most common mistakes!

1️⃣ Poor Posture & Hand Position

Slouching, flat fingers, or stiff wrists make it harder to control your sound.

👉 Sit tall with relaxed shoulders and curved fingers, as if holding a small ball.

👉 Keep your wrists flexible. They should move smoothly as you play across the keys.

2️⃣ Heavy Hands & Tense Playing

Pressing too hard creates a harsh tone and quickly tires you out.

👉 Let gravity help! Drop your fingers naturally onto the keys instead of forcing them down.

👉 Check that your arms and shoulders are loose. Tension kills control.

3️⃣ Uneven Fingers & Clumsy Thumbs

Ever notice some notes sound louder than others? That’s uneven finger pressure.

👉 Practice slow scales with even tone across all fingers. (we all hate scales but this will pay off, trust me)

👉 Keep your thumb relaxed and close to your hand instead of sticking out.

4️⃣ Forgetting Expression

Getting the notes right isnt enough. Remember, you’re telling a story!

👉 Add dynamics (soft vs loud) and phrasing early in your practice.

👉 Listen to how your playing “breathes.” Music should feel alive, not mechanical.

//extra tips//

❗️Rushing & Skipping Slow Practice

Many students speed through tricky sections or avoid slow practice.

👉 Slow down and use a metronome, your future self will thank you!

👉 Practice hands separately to build accuracy before combining.

❗️ Pedal Problems

The sustain pedal adds beauty, but too much makes everything muddy.

👉 Avoid holding it down the whole time.

👉 Listen closely and lift slightly when harmonies change to keep your sound clean.

Good technique isn’t about perfection but about freedom.

When you remove tension and bad habits, you can focus on what really matters: expressing yourself through music!

... Read moreOne aspect many beginners overlook is the importance of the piano bench height and how far you sit from the piano. From my experience, your butt should be seated at the midpoint of the bench—not too far forward or back—to maintain balance and mobility. Your seat height should allow your elbows to rest slightly above the keys, letting your arms hang relaxed from the shoulders. Sitting too close or too far can badly affect your control and comfort. Aim for an arm’s length distance from the piano; this gives you enough space to move your arms freely without strain. Another common issue is how high your piano is set. The keys should be at a height where your forearms are roughly parallel to the floor when playing. If the piano is too low or too high, it can create tension in your wrists and shoulders. When practicing, always check these components because good posture is the foundation of efficient piano technique. It helps you avoid injuries, maintain stamina while playing, and express music more beautifully. Personally, I also found that combining proper bench height with mindful pedal use—lifting the sustain pedal slightly during harmony changes—greatly improved the clarity of my sound. These little adjustments made practice more enjoyable and less tiring. Remember, piano technique is a balance between comfort, control, and expression. Consistent attention to posture and positioning will free you to focus on making music your own.
