A lot of corporate culture is just performance.

Performing calm.

Performing busy.

Performing grateful.

Performing “professional.”

And sometimes, if you tell the truth or step out of character, you suddenly become the problem.

Healthy workplaces should not require people to constantly act the part just to be seen as competent, committed, or worthy of respect.

Professionalism matters. But when optics matter more than honesty, people learn to protect appearances instead of building trust.

... Read moreIn my experience working in various corporate environments, I've often noticed how much of the day-to-day interactions feel more like a performance than genuine communication. People tend to 'perform' certain behaviors—acting calm under pressure, appearing busy to show productivity, or expressing gratitude in a way that feels rehearsed. While these behaviors can sometimes help maintain order, they often lead to a workplace where authenticity is sacrificed. One powerful realization is that when honesty conflicts with these unspoken 'performance expectations,' the person being truthful or falling out of character is often labeled "not a culture fit." This creates a toxic environment where employees hide their true feelings, inhibit creativity, and lose trust in leadership. I've seen talented individuals leave roles simply because they felt forced to wear a mask all day. Building a truly healthy workplace means encouraging openness and valuing individuals for their genuine input rather than their ability to follow scripted roles. Professionalism indeed matters—it fosters respect and accountability—but it should not come at the expense of honesty or psychological safety. Leaders who openly embrace vulnerability and foster transparency help cultivate environments where trust can flourish. Moreover, a culture based on authentic interactions encourages better collaboration, improves employee engagement, and enhances wellbeing. It's important for organizations to recognize the difference between superficial "optics" and meaningful professional conduct. When companies reward authenticity, they empower employees to bring their full selves to work, ultimately driving better outcomes both for the people and the business.
