Many high performers learn this lesson the hard way.

The more capable you are, the more likely people are to bring work to you. At first it feels like trust. Sometimes it is.

But over time, being the person who always says yes can turn into being the person who carries everything.

Being helpful is a strength.

Feeling responsible for every problem is not.

... Read moreIn my own experience navigating workplace dynamics, I've found that distinguishing between being helpful and being simply available can make or break your professional wellbeing. Helpful colleagues are problem solvers who contribute value and build credibility, while being constantly available tends to create dependency and unrealistic expectations. Early in my career, I often said yes to every request, thinking this would build trust and demonstrate reliability. However, over time, I noticed I was becoming the 'go-to backup plan' for every problem, draining my energy and limiting my focus on core responsibilities. This taught me that being helpful means prioritizing meaningful contributions that align with your strengths and career goals, rather than taking on every task out of obligation. Setting boundaries is key. It’s important to communicate your limits respectfully, so that you can maintain a healthy workload without sacrificing your reputation. When you help strategically, you become respected and valued. When you're always available, people start to expect you’re the default problem solver, which can lead to burnout. From experience, investing in professional development to improve your problem-solving skills while managing availability helps long-term career growth. Remember: helpful people build credibility and influence; available people risk becoming overwhelmed and dependent. Balancing these aspects enriches your workplace culture and supports your leadership journey.
