High performers are often not tired because they cannot handle the work.

They are tired because they keep becoming the solution to every broken system, missing process, unclear expectation, and understaffed team.

Being capable is not the same as having unlimited capacity. And being reliable should not mean becoming the place where everyone else drops what they did not plan for.

... Read moreIn my experience working with high performers, it’s clear that their fatigue isn't about the work itself but about how they become the default fix for every organizational gap. One common tendency I’ve noticed is they say "yes" to tasks before realistically assessing their capacity, leading to an overwhelming load. This habit often makes them the backup plan when others drop the ball or haven’t planned effectively. High performers tend to tackle tough problems quickly, sometimes before anyone else even spots the issue. While this skill is invaluable, it unfortunately sets a precedent where their reliability is taken for granted, and they end up bearing the brunt of unplanned demands. Over time, this can lead to feeling overburdened rather than protected or supported. A key lesson I've learned is that being capable does not equate to having unlimited capacity. Organizations must recognize that leveraging high performers should not become an excuse to continually increase their responsibilities. It’s essential for leaders to set clear boundaries, clarify expectations, and ensure adequate staffing to prevent burnout. In practical terms, high performers should practice assessing their workload before committing and communicate openly about their limits. Leadership can contribute by creating a culture where sharing the load is encouraged and systemic issues—like missing processes or unclear expectations—are addressed proactively rather than relying solely on individual heroics. Ultimately, sustainable high performance comes from balance: empowering top talent to excel while protecting them from overload. This creates a healthier workplace culture, supports career growth, and reduces the risk of burnout, benefiting both individuals and organizations alike.
