Here's my #MiniBookReview for Son of Osivirius, by Cathryn DeVries! It releases February 17th, pre-order it here: https://a.co/d/60Zh0d7 so you can get to know:

😎A guy who’s a bit of a jerk and thinks he knows how to get what he wants.

😠A girl who hates everything he represents, wishes he was dead, and is super-protective of her brother.

😼A giant flying cat who bridges the gap, and thinks in surprising ways.

🎖️A manipulative colony commander who knows how to land on his feet.

🌐All wrapped up in a delicious world-building package!

1/29 Edited to

... Read moreReading "Son of Osivirius" was an immersive experience that stood out for its blend of rich world-building and memorable characters. From the outset, the narrative hooks you with Jayden, a flawed yet compelling protagonist whose journey reveals much about trust and survival. His interactions with villagers, especially Nettle and her brother Fint, highlight an essential theme in the story: the nuances of loyalty and perception in a divided world. What truly elevates this novella is the detailed setting that brings the world to life with vivid descriptions. The flying thopter rides and the contrasting environments—dangerous colonies versus peaceful villages—add layers that make the story feel expansive despite its novella length. The presence of a giant flying cat adds an element of fantasy that deepens the world’s uniqueness and intrigue. From a personal viewpoint, the novella skillfully balances intense emotions with moments of hope and humor through character dynamics. The tension between the colony commander’s manipulation and the protagonist’s evolving perspective on the village showcases themes of power, redemption, and humanity’s complexity. For readers who appreciate character-driven science fantasy with a dose of political intrigue and heartfelt connections, "Son of Osivirius" offers a rewarding and thought-provoking reading experience. This story is not just about conflict but about understanding others and challenging one’s beliefs, making it resonate on many levels. If you’re looking to explore a narrative that combines adventure, intricate relationships, and a richly crafted world, this novella is a must-read. Don’t miss its February 17th release—pre-ordering is highly recommended to be among the first to engage with this captivating story.

Warnings: moderate swearing, death, and some violence This was an amazing science fantasy novella! From the first page I was sucked in and invested in Jayden's story. I enjoyed his growing camaraderie with Flint and how he integrated into the valley, even if it was for the wrong reasons at first. I loved how he kept trying to crack the wall that Nettle had built, and watching their no-spice romance slowly build. The Masu creatures were a great touch, bringing hope and balance to the people and the world they had settled on. The world-building was exquisite, with wonderful descriptions that brought the story to life. I received an Advanced Reader Copy with no expectation of a review. All opinions are my own.
