Christmas Movie for Adults - Part 3

1. A Very Country Christmas, 2017

⭐️Rate: 7/10

🎬Review: I end up watching a ton of these Christmas romcoms around the Holidays. They are all pretty schlocky. This one is no different. The story-such as it is-is a predictable trope driven yarn that is a gentler version of A Star is Born ultimately. Yet, the leads are both appealing and the director keeps the proceedings moving. The film feels more high end than a lot of this subgenre. There's enough warm fuzzies and laughs present to recommend this.

2. Let It Snow, 2019

⭐️Rate: 7/10

🎬Review: I wasn't sure what to expect when my wife and I decided to watch this as we're not really the demographic it was made for. We ended up really enjoying it! It was reminiscent of the John Hughes films we watched in the 1980s. We both recommend giving it a try.

3. Last Christmas, 2019

⭐️Rate: 8/10

🎬Review: Just when we think the gush of Christmas commercials and specials are over, along comes LAST CHRISTMAS, and if ever there were a film that could enchant, this is one that does. Written by Emma Thompson (who also plays a significant role in the movie) and Greg Wise with screenplay adaptation aided by Bryony Kimmings, the film seems a bit of fluff, overly decorated, until the messages begin to sink in. And by the end the film is elevating, thanks to some fine acting and direction. George Michael's music plays a primary role, also.

Katrina/Kate (Emilia Clarke) is a young woman subscribed to bad decisions. Working as an elf in a year round Christmas store owned by 'Santa' (Michele Yeoh) is not good for the wannabe singer.

However, there she meets Tom (Henry Golding), a kind-hearted man with a mysterious past who challenges her cynical worldview. Kate slowly comes to realize that Tom is 'significant' and her life takes a new turn. For Kate, it seems too good to be true. Completing the entourage is Kate's Yugoslavian immigrant family - mother Petra (Emma Thompson), father Ivan (Boris Isakovic) and sister Marta (Lydia Leonard) - each with conflicts and problems of their own. It all comes together with a discovery (one that should not be shared) and the grand finale at the homeless sanctuary is rich in honest goodwill - 'helping each other'

This is a feel good movie, well acted, and one that can be uplifting - if you've a mind to be uplifted!

4. A Charlie Brown Christmas, 1965

⭐️Rate: 7/10

🎬Review: This is the beloved classic! This is the tender, caring Charlie Brown Christmas that keeps the family warm holiday season after holiday season! What is Christmas about? Why is everything becoming so commercial? These questions were asked back in 1965, and the answers hit the nail right on the head. Today, the meaning is just that much more impactful because, frankly, today is even more commercial and soulless than 1965.

The writing is typical Peanuts wry, and is well-placed by the children actor's voices. Having children do children voices is actually kind of rare, but this shows it shouldn't be: they do really well and it's touching to hear them.

The animation itself is starting to get a bit dated and is a little slow/jerky, but considering the belovedness of this classic... people are either going to get offended at the mention of that fact or will claim that it doesn't matter. So there you go. It's enjoyable anyways.
