If my clients are ever curious about what I do before session…. Well, here’s a bit of insight 🤪🫶🏻 #therapyhumor #therapistsontiktok
You know, that little peek into my pre-session routine was just for fun, a bit of #therapyhumor! But it got me thinking, many of you probably wonder what a therapist really does beyond those 50 minutes we spend together. It's not just about showing up right before our scheduled time, as that little snippet implied. There's so much more that goes into being a therapist, and it's something I often reflect on to ensure I'm bringing my best self to every single appointment. First off, that “therapist before session” moment isn't just about grabbing a coffee or doing a quick mental check. It's often preceded by thoughtful preparation. I review notes from our last session, recall key themes, and sometimes even jot down a few guiding questions or points I want to ensure we touch upon. This isn't about scripting the session, but rather about being fully present and prepared to guide our conversation effectively. It's about remembering your journey, your progress, and your current challenges, so we don't start from scratch every time. But what about the time between sessions, or even outside of client hours? That's where a lot of the less visible, but equally crucial, work happens. For instance, consultation and supervision are huge parts of our professional development. We regularly consult with seasoned colleagues or supervisors to discuss cases (always anonymously, of course, to protect your privacy!). This helps us gain fresh perspectives, ensure ethical practice, and continuously sharpen our clinical skills. It's like having our own support system, making sure we're not operating in a vacuum. Then there's continuing education. The field of mental health is constantly evolving, with new research, theories, and therapeutic approaches emerging all the time. Therapists are always learning, attending workshops, reading academic journals, and participating in specialized training. This commitment to lifelong learning ensures we're equipped with the most effective and up-to-date tools to support you. It's not just a requirement; it's a passion for helping people live better lives. And let's not forget self-care. This is absolutely paramount. We spend our days holding space for intense emotions, listening to difficult stories, and helping others navigate their pain. If we don't actively prioritize our own mental and emotional well-being, we simply won't be able to provide the best care. This can look different for everyone – for me, it might be a walk in nature, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in my own hobbies. It’s about replenishing our emotional reserves so we can show up fully for you. Finally, there's the administrative side – scheduling, paperwork, billing, and all the things that keep a practice running smoothly. While not the most glamorous part, it’s essential for maintaining a professional and accessible service. So, while that quick peek into my pre-session ritual was lighthearted, know that it's just one tiny piece of a much larger, dedicated process. Being a therapist is a calling that involves continuous learning, ethical reflection, personal growth, and a deep commitment to supporting others on their journey. It's a role I take seriously, even if I do have a chuckle or two before diving into a session!
