5 Days in Belize City

So, you're thinking about a Belize vacation? Beyond my amazing birthday trip to Hopkins, I wanted to share some general tips to help you plan your own unforgettable escape to this incredible country. Belize offers so much more than just beautiful beaches and clear oceans; it's a diverse destination perfect for every type of traveler. First off, when's the best time to visit? The dry season, from late November to May, generally offers sunny skies and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring. The wet season (June to November) can bring more rain, but also lush landscapes and fewer crowds. I visited in December, which was perfect for enjoying the warm weather and outdoor activities. Getting around Belize can be an adventure itself! Most international flights land at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City. From there, you can take small domestic flights (Maya Island Air or Tropic Air) to popular destinations like San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), Caye Caulker, Placencia, or Dangriga (closest to Hopkins). For a more budget-friendly option, local buses connect many towns, or you can arrange private shuttles. Renting a car is also an option if you're comfortable driving on sometimes challenging roads. While Hopkins Village offered a serene, authentic beach experience, Belize boasts many other fantastic spots. If you're into diving and snorkeling, Ambergris Caye, with its vibrant town of San Pedro, is a must-see, home to the famous Hol Chan Marine Reserve. For a super laid-back vibe where golf carts are the main mode of transport, Caye Caulker lives up to its 'Go Slow' motto. Placencia, another southern peninsula, offers long sandy beaches and a charming village atmosphere, often a bit more bustling than Hopkins. Don't forget to explore inland Belize too! Places like San Ignacio in the Cayo District are gateways to ancient Maya ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, and the incredible Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, an archaeological wonder. It’s a completely different side of Belize, rich in history and adventure. Beyond the delicious ceviche I enjoyed, Belizean cuisine is a treat. You absolutely have to try fry jacks for breakfast, a staple often served with refried beans, eggs, and cheese. For lunch or dinner, look for stew chicken with rice and beans (cooked with coconut milk!) and potato salad – it's a national dish. Fresh seafood is abundant everywhere, of course. A few practical tips: The local currency is the Belizean Dollar (BZD), but US dollars are widely accepted at a fixed rate of 2 BZD to 1 USD. English is the official language, which makes travel incredibly easy. Remember to pack light, breathable clothing, plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, a good hat, insect repellent, and definitely your swimwear for those stunning ocean dips! Staying at a resort or an Airbnb near the beach gives you easy access to all the water activities you could dream of.
