Let’s Talk: Out of State College

I chose to go to school out of state because I wanted more than a new chapter… I wanted a completely new environment that felt like a reset.

When I toured campus, the first thing I noticed was the sense of community. Students walking together between classes, people hanging out on the lawn, everyone actually saying hi to each other. It felt warm. It felt connected. It felt like a place where people genuinely care.

I also wanted the chance to meet new people, not just the same faces I’d grown up with, but people with different backgrounds, different stories, and different perspectives. I wanted friendships that would challenge me, grow me, and open my world a little wider.

And honestly, the change of scenery was something I didn’t know I needed until I saw it. New buildings, new weather, new places to study, even different sunsets… it all felt refreshing. Like stepping into a version of life where I could reinvent myself and build something completely new.

Going out of state wasn’t easy, but it made campus feel like a place I chose, not a place I settled for.

... Read moreChoosing to attend college out of state is a bold decision that can profoundly shape your personal and academic growth. One of the greatest benefits is the strong sense of community many out-of-state schools cultivate. Even though you might be far from home, the right campus environment fosters genuine connections—students greet each other, form study groups, and engage in activities that make the campus feel welcoming and inclusive. This support network is particularly valuable when you’re adjusting to life away from familiar faces. Another rewarding aspect is the opportunity to broaden your social circle. By going out of state, you meet people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, opening your world to perspectives you might not encounter at a local or smaller school. These new friendships can challenge your viewpoints, encourage personal growth, and even influence your career outlook. The change of scenery also plays a critical role in making the experience refreshing and inspiring. For example, moving from a Midwestern state like Wisconsin to a southwestern one such as Arizona introduces not only a dramatically different climate and landscape but also new lifestyle possibilities—from exploring nature and trying new outdoor activities to discovering unique local traditions and events. This shift helps many students reinvent themselves and break free from old patterns. Of course, attending college far from home carries challenges. Homesickness, navigating a new city, and managing independence require resilience. However, for many, these challenges contribute to valuable life skills—self-reliance, adaptability, and confidence—which are important stepping stones to adulthood. Ultimately, attending an out-of-state college can feel like choosing your path deliberately rather than settling by default. It’s about creating an experience tailored to your dreams, one where education goes beyond the classroom into community, culture, and self-discovery.
