Protecting my peace
📍 City: Hickory, NC
Sometimes, you need to go back to where it all started to find clarity. I recently returned to my home state of North Carolina and spent the day hiking through the vibrant fall woods. It wasn’t just a chance to reconnect with nature—it was an intentional escape from the toxicity I was dealing with in my current life in Florida, especially the emotional weight of a one-sided friendship that had been draining me.
This moment, sitting on a moss-covered rock surrounded by fiery reds, warm oranges, and golden yellows, felt like freedom. Back in Florida, I had been giving so much of myself to someone who didn’t reciprocate, and it left me feeling unappreciated and worn down. Returning to North Carolina, where I’ve always felt grounded, gave me the space to reflect, release those emotions, and start healing.
There’s something incredibly empowering about being in nature, especially in a place that feels like home. As I climbed, paused, and took in the beauty around me, I felt my mind quieting and my heart letting go of the weight I’d been carrying. This trip reminded me of the importance of stepping away—not just from toxic situations, but from environments that don’t nurture your soul.
I left that trail with more than just beautiful memories—I left with clarity, strength, and a deeper understanding of what I need to prioritize in my life. If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, consider returning to a place that brings you peace, whether it’s your hometown or somewhere that feels like home. Sometimes, a new (or familiar) environment can give you the perspective and courage you need to let go and move forward.
