What is Ophthalmology 👀🩺💕

Ophthalmology will be the third rotation that I’ll do during my clinical year. And it’s gonna last one week.

One point of confusion is what is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. Optometrists go to optometry school and they diagnosed and treat problems with the eyes. Ophthalmologist go to medical school and then further sub specialize in optometry and they perform medical and surgical treatments for different eye conditions.

Some common ophthalmologist procedures that I might see on my rotation, include cataract surgery, Lasik, surgery, glaucoma, surgery, and the list goes on and on.

Some ophthalmologist also focus on research that looks at causes and cures for different eye diseases.

There are also different subspecialties that you can do within ophthalmology like noor, ophthalmology, oculoplastics, or pediatric ophthalmology. It’s a field that covers a variety of different patient populations and procedures, and I’m very excited to learn more about it.
