What is NST? ✨

Since my OB started me on weekly NSTs around 33 weeks, I've learned so much about this crucial test! When I first heard 'Non-Stress Test,' I honestly pictured something very clinical, but it's actually quite simple and reassuring. For those wondering, it's essentially a safe, noninvasive prenatal test designed to check the health of your fetus by monitoring their heart rate. Before my first one, I was a bit nervous about what to expect. My best advice for anyone going in for their non stress test pregnancy is to try and have a snack beforehand. I've found that a little sugar or juice can sometimes wake up your little one and encourage those all-important movements! Wear comfortable clothes too, as you'll be lying down for about 20-30 minutes with the monitor belt around your pregnant belly. They usually apply two monitors: one to track your baby's heart rate and another to detect any uterine contractions. My tech was great at finding the perfect spot for the little transducers on my belly. During the test, the main goal is to see your baby's heart rate spike a few times in response to their movements. My OB told me we're looking for at least two accelerations (spikes) of their heart rate within that 20-30 minute window. Each spike should last at least 15 seconds and be 15 beats per minute above their baseline. If your baby is sleeping, which mine often seemed to be when strapped to the monitor belt, they might try to wake them up gently. Sometimes they offer a buzzer, or just ask you to drink more water or juice. It's truly incredible to hear their tiny heart beating so strong! What happens if your baby isn't very active during the test, or if they don't show enough accelerations? Don't panic! It doesn't automatically mean something is wrong. Often, baby is just sleepy or in a quiet phase. If your NST is 'non-reactive,' meaning it doesn't meet the criteria, your doctor might extend the test, ask you to come back later, or order further tests like a Biophysical Profile (BPP) or a Contraction Stress Test. These are just additional ways to get more information and ensure your little one is thriving. For me, these weekly non stress tests have become a little ritual. It's a precious 20-30 minutes where I get to just lie still, listen to my baby's heartbeat, and feel reassured that everything is going well. It really helps ease my mind, especially as I get closer to my due date. It's amazing how much technology can tell us about our babies before they even arrive! If your doctor recommends an NST, embrace it as another way to connect with your baby and ensure their well-being.
