My October Proverbs Challenge ✝️

When I first started my 31-day Proverbs challenge, the phrase 'cry out for insight and ask for understanding' from Proverbs 2:3-4 really jumped out at me. It wasn't just about reading words on a page; it was an invitation to actively pursue wisdom, to seek it like a hidden treasure. I realized that merely going through the motions wouldn't unlock the deep truths these ancient texts hold. This verse became my guiding light, prompting me to engage with the text in a much deeper way. For me, 'crying out' began with intentional prayer before each day's chapter. I’d ask God to open my mind and heart, to make the verses relevant to my life right now. It felt less like a formal request and more like an earnest plea, a genuine desire for guidance. Then, as I read, especially using Goodnotes, I found myself highlighting, circling, and jotting down questions. Sometimes a single verse, like 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge' (Proverbs 1:7), would spark an entire reflection. I’d ponder what it truly means to 'fear the Lord'—not with terror, but with reverent awe and respect for His wisdom and power. This deep dive into understanding the foundational principles was crucial. 'Asking for understanding' became a two-fold process. First, it was about digging into the text itself. I’d look up cross-references, read different translations, and think about the context. The OCR content often highlighted themes like the 'Benefits of Wisdom' or how wisdom acts as a 'Treasure, Shield, and Guard.' This encouraged me to see wisdom not just as abstract knowledge, but as a practical tool for daily living. For instance, Proverbs 2 talks about wisdom protecting you from evil people and immoral paths. How does that practically apply to my decisions at work or in relationships? I'd journal about specific situations where I needed discernment or protection, realizing that wisdom truly does protect those who are faithful. Secondly, 'asking' involved discussing these insights with trusted friends or mentors. Sometimes, what seemed like a simple verse transformed into profound life advice after sharing perspectives. The challenge wasn't just a solo endeavor; it became a communal search for understanding. I discovered that wisdom truly does grant 'good judgment, astute common sense,' and 'knowledge and discretion,' as the early chapters of Proverbs promise. Trusting the Lord, as Proverbs 3 emphasizes, became less of a distant concept and more of a daily practice, especially when faced with decisions where my own wisdom fell short.
