The phrase “pluck out your eye if you lust” is frequently wielded as a strict admonition for women, yet when applied to men, it is softened into metaphors or dismissed with excuses like “boys will be boys.” This selective application not only perpetuates gender inequality but also creates an environment where men escape accountability while women bear the brunt of moral policing. I have seen communities where women are scrutinized intensely for modesty or purity, often facing judgment and shame that men do not experience equally. Meanwhile, men’s weaknesses or missteps are reframed as natural or forgivable. This uneven enforcement of scripture fosters resentment and fosters mistrust toward religious authorities who enforce these double standards. Understanding that patriarchal systems use selective scripture interpretation to control behavior highlights the need for honest dialogue and reform. Real accountability means applying the same moral standards to all genders consistently. By speaking openly about these blind spots, we can work toward religious environments that promote justice, empower women, and hold everyone equally responsible for their actions. My hope is that more voices will rise to challenge this hypocrisy, encouraging communities to reject selective morality and embrace true accountability rooted in fairness and compassion.
