Growing up, I remember how often girls around me were encouraged to be quiet and agreeable, to prioritize others' feelings over their own. It wasn’t until adulthood that I realized this constant conditioning made me doubt my own worth and voice. The message that our value depends on others’ approval creates a lifelong struggle for validation and limits our potential. Reflecting on the idea that “boys are taught to chase respect, while girls chase approval,” I see how different expectations impact self-esteem. Boys often learn to build confidence from their character and actions, while girls are left chasing acceptance, sometimes at the cost of their authenticity. This social conditioning teaches worth as conditional rather than inherent. Changing this narrative begins with how we raise the next generation. By encouraging girls to trust their intuition, set boundaries, and embrace their unique identities, we nurture stronger, more resilient individuals. Similarly, teaching boys empathy and collaboration over dominance contributes to a balanced society where all voices matter. From personal experience, when I shifted from people-pleasing to prioritizing self-respect, my relationships and opportunities blossomed. Embracing imperfection and asserting boundaries wasn’t easy, but it was liberating. This empowerment moves beyond feminism as a concept—it becomes a daily practice of honoring oneself.
