What do you let your toddlers watch?

2024/5/30 Edited to

... Read moreFinding the right TV shows for my toddlers can feel like a quest, especially when the weather keeps us indoors or I just need a few minutes to get something done. My main goal is always to find content that's not just entertaining, but genuinely educational and engaging. After much trial and error (and countless hours of research!), I've discovered a few gems that my little ones adore and that I feel good about them watching. First up, Ms. Rachel from "Songs for Littles" is an absolute game-changer, and it's no wonder she's so popular. Her videos, like "Hop Little Bunnies," are fantastic for encouraging language development, early learning, and social-emotional skills. She uses clear, expressive language, sign language, and simple songs that toddlers easily latch onto. I've seen my child's vocabulary grow just by watching her! She makes learning so interactive and fun, it barely feels like passive screen time. Then there's Bluey, which is a huge hit in our house. While it might not be overtly "educational" in the traditional sense, it's brilliant for teaching emotional intelligence, imaginative play, and healthy family dynamics. Each episode is a masterclass in creativity and problem-solving, and honestly, my partner and I enjoy watching it too! It's refreshing to see a show that champions play and connection in such a heartfelt way. For those curious explorers, Blippi offers a vibrant and energetic approach to learning about the world. Whether he’s exploring construction sites, visiting museums, or baking "Dinosaur Egg Cookies," Blippi introduces concepts like colors, shapes, and numbers in a highly visual and engaging way. My kids are always asking questions after watching him, which I think is a great sign! You can find many of his adventures on YouTube. And who can forget Pinkfong? Beyond the catchy "Baby Shark" songs, their content, like the "Police Car Song," is fantastic for early learning. They focus on basic concepts, nursery rhymes, and often feature bright, colorful animations that capture a toddler's attention. It's a great choice for quick, fun bursts of learning. Beyond these well-known favorites, there are other fantastic options. For a calming and faith-based experience, "The Beginners Bible" offers animated stories that are simple and sweet. If your child is into science and nature, "Elinor Wonders Why" encourages curiosity and critical thinking, always asking "why?" and exploring answers. For something a bit silly and focused on simple problem-solving and food, "The Bumble Nums" (especially their "Underwater Watermelon Salad" episode) can be surprisingly engaging. And for classic nursery rhymes with a modern twist, "Little Baby Bum" on Netflix is always a good bet for young ones, even 18-month-olds. You might also find nostalgic favorites like "The Backyardigans" for musical adventures, or simple, fun animations like "Talking Pocoyo" and "Bebefinn" on platforms like YouTube, often focusing on songs or imaginative play. Shows like "Mörphle" also offer unique stories for curious minds. When it comes to managing screen time, I try to think of these shows as tools rather than just distractions. We often watch together, talk about what's happening, and sometimes even sing the songs or try to replicate the activities. Most of these can be found on popular streaming platforms like Disney+, YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix, making them easily accessible. It's all about finding that balance and choosing content that truly enriches their little minds. What about your family? I’d love to hear what educational shows have been a hit with your toddlers and young kids! There's always something new to discover.
