... Read moreI absolutely love how quickly my journals fill up when I dedicate pages to my favorite music! Music journaling is such a therapeutic and creative outlet, allowing you to connect with songs on a deeper level. If you're looking for fresh inspiration, here are some of my go-to ideas and prompts to get your musical journal flowing.
One of my absolute favorite ways to track my musical journey is by creating listening logs. Inspired by pages like 'everything I listened to in May 2023,' I dedicate a spread each month to all the new discoveries, old favorites, and songs that defined that period. You can list the song title, artist, release date, and a quick note about your mood or what the song reminds you of. It's like a personal soundtrack to your life, and it's so much fun to look back on!
Another fantastic idea is to create lyric spreads. Whether it's a powerful line from Nessa Barrett's 'the hardest pill to swallow' or an intense phrase like 'blood sucker, fame fucker, bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire...', lyrics can be incredibly impactful. Pick a line or a verse that resonates with you and dedicate a whole page to it. You can hand-letter the lyrics, doodle around them, or even do a collage with images that represent the song's theme. Thinking about how a specific query like 'justin bieber dotted line lyrics' might arise, incorporating any specific artist's lyrics is a popular way to personalize your journal. It's not just about writing them down; it's about exploring what they mean to you.
For those of us who love diving deep into albums, album deep dives are a must. I recently did a special spread for Olivia Rodrigo's 'GUTS' album, listing the tracklist and noting my initial reactions to each song. You could also do a ranking, like the 'young forever - nessa barrett rank' page, or dedicate space to the album's artwork, themes, and your overall feelings. It's a wonderful way to celebrate new releases and appreciate the artist's work.
Beyond specific songs or albums, you can also explore thematic journaling. Think about a page titled 'Silence Between Songs,' where you list songs that evoke a sense of calm, or create a 'playlist for a rainy day.' You can group songs by mood, genre, or even by a fictional scenario you create.
If you're ever stuck on what to write, here are some music journal prompts to spark your creativity:
What's a song that perfectly describes your mood today? Why?
If your life had a soundtrack, what would be the opening track and the closing track?
Design an album cover for your current life chapter. What would it be called?
Pick a song you've loved for a long time. Write about how your interpretation of it has changed over the years.
Create a playlist for a dream road trip.
If you could collaborate with any musician, living or past, who would it be and what kind of song would you create?
To make your music journaling even more engaging, don't be afraid to get artistic! I love using stickers – like the botanical ones, butterflies, or even playful elements like bats and playing cards seen in some of my pages – to add personality. Doodles, washi tape, and colored pens can transform a simple page into a vibrant reflection of your musical soul. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to journal; it's all about personal expression. Just grab your journal, put on your favorite tunes, and let the inspiration flow!
