6 figure salaries aren’t the norm

Ask someone in tech or finance to define “middle class” and you might hear "$100K".

But 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 and most don’t hit six figures 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 40𝘴.

Stanford University’s Class of ’25 reports a $182K median salary in tech. Within that bubble, six figures feels average — but it’s not.

Executives and hiring managers live in rarefied circles. If your reference point is peers making $150K+, it’s easy to forget what $60K buys and what it feels like.

Compensation decisions, performance reviews, and even #InclusionEfforts suffer when pay expectations are not grounded in national reality.

If most leaders are surrounded by affluence, how can companies build compensation systems rooted in #empathy and #data ?

... Read moreYou know, for the longest time, I felt like everyone around me was chasing or already hitting that 'six-figure salary' mark. Especially when you're scrolling online or hearing about tech salaries, it can really skew your perception of what's financially average. But after digging into the real data, it's clear: 'Six-Figure Salaries: Rarer Than We Think' isn't just a catchy phrase, it's the undeniable truth. I was genuinely surprised to learn that a staggering '4 in 5 U.S. workers do not earn $100,000+'. That's 80% of the workforce! It really puts into perspective how much of an outlier a six-figure income actually is for most Americans. While we might hear about a 'median tech salary of Stanford's Class of '25' that easily clears $100,000, that's often a very specific bubble, comprised of highly specialized roles in competitive markets, not the broader economic reality across all industries and geographies. This disparity creates a common misconception, making many of us feel like we're falling behind when, in fact, we're very much aligned with the national average. This isn't to say that a six-figure income isn't achievable or a worthy goal for those who aspire to it. Many professionals in specialized fields, management roles, or certain high-demand industries like tech, finance, or healthcare do indeed reach these levels. However, it often takes years of dedicated experience, advanced education, continuous skill development, or a unique, in-demand skill set to command such compensation. It's rarely a starting point for most careers, and certainly not the 'middle class' benchmark some might casually assume. Understanding this journey can help set more realistic career and financial planning goals than simply expecting to hit that number early on. What I've also realized is that focusing solely on the gross number can be incredibly misleading. A six-figure salary in a high cost-of-living area like New York City, San Francisco, or even some rapidly growing tech hubs, might offer a similar or even lesser quality of life compared to a much lower salary in a more affordable region. When you factor in taxes, housing costs, transportation, and daily expenses, the purchasing power can vary dramatically. It's truly about your net income and how far that money stretches in your specific location. For me, understanding this has helped reframe my financial goals, shifting focus from just chasing an arbitrary number to building personal financial security, achieving specific savings targets, and ensuring a comfortable lifestyle that feels rich to *me*, rather than what external societal benchmarks suggest. This deeper dive into salary realities really makes you think about broader inclusion efforts and empathy in compensation discussions for all workers, ensuring fair pay practices are grounded in data and real-world costs of living, not just the perceptions of a privileged few.
