Trad wives are ruining social media

As someone who spends a fair amount of time on social media, I've really noticed the surging popularity of the 'trad wife' and 'traditional wife' trend. It seems to be everywhere, from TikTok to Lemon8, showcasing women embracing what they present as a return to traditional gender roles focused on homemaking, submission, and often, a rejection of modern feminism. Initially, it might seem harmless, or even appealing to some looking for a simpler life, but I've personally started to question if this 'tradwife trend' is actually beneficial or if it's potentially 'ruining social media' for many of us. What exactly is a 'trad wife'? From what I've observed, it's typically a woman who identifies with a lifestyle centered around domesticity, often with a focus on serving her husband and family, and rejecting career ambitions outside the home. While there's absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a stay-at-home lifestyle – many wonderful #sahm (Stay-at-Home Moms) thrive and contribute immensely – the 'trad wife' narrative often feels different. It frequently comes with a performative element, focusing on aesthetically pleasing home setups, specific #tradwifeoutfit choices, and carefully curated content that can feel less about genuine choice and more about an idealized, often unrealistic, portrayal. My concern, and what I believe makes this trend problematic on social media, stems from several aspects. Firstly, it often promotes an impossibly perfect image of domestic bliss. We see spotless homes, elaborate meals, and serene mothers, which can set incredibly high and unattainable standards for other women, leading to feelings of inadequacy. As a result, it can put immense pressure on women to conform to a very narrow definition of success and femininity, rather than celebrating diverse choices and strengths. Moreover, the 'trad wife' movement, as portrayed online, sometimes flirts with or outright embraces ideologies that can be regressive or even misogynistic. I've encountered content that explicitly criticizes women who pursue careers, advocates for male dominance, or implicitly shames those who don't fit the 'trad wife' mold, labeling them as 'nasty women' or less valuable. This kind of content, even if presented subtly, can contribute to a societal narrative that undermines women's autonomy and reinforces harmful stereotypes. It feels like a step backward for many of the freedoms and choices women have fought for. The trend also often simplifies complex issues. The idea of traditional roles is romanticized without acknowledging the historical context, the economic realities, or the potential for abuse and lack of agency that women faced in past eras. It turns a historical and societal discussion into a surface-level 'tradwife meme' or an aesthetic choice, rather than a deep, personal decision that should be respected for its individual merit, not its adherence to a rigid online trend. I believe we need to be more critical of the messages we consume and share, especially when they promote a lifestyle that might look appealing on the surface but carries concerning undertones. It’s crucial to foster an online environment where all choices are respected, without implicitly or explicitly shaming others for their paths.
