You moved to Florida to escape the cold, and yet,

Surprise! It found us.

We might not think much of freezing temps because we’ve lived this weather before, but your Florida home absolutely does. Homes here aren’t built with prolonged cold in mind, so when temperatures dip to freezing, a little prep can make a big difference.

Here are some simple, must-do tips to keep your Florida love nest or family home safe and secure this weekend:

🏡 Keep the heat on

Even overnight or if you’re away, set your thermostat around 65°. Florida homes cool fast, and pipes don’t love that.

🚰 Protect your pipes…

• Let faucets drip (especially those on exterior walls).

• Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate.

• Insulate or wrap exposed pipes if you can.

🌿 Disconnect the outdoors…

• Remove and drain garden hoses.

• Cover outdoor spigots if you have covers handy.

🧠 Know your shut-off…

Take 30 seconds to remind yourself where the main water shutoff is, just in case.

We came here for sunshine, pools, and flip-flops, not frozen pipes. A little preparation now helps ensure your Florida home weathers the cold snap without costly surprises.

Stay warm, friends, and let’s all collectively ask winter to go back where it belongs. ☀️

... Read moreLiving in Florida mainly for its warm climate, I didn’t expect my home to face serious issues during a rare cold snap, but I quickly learned these unexpected winter visits require special attention. One personal experience that stood out was waking up to a chilly house because I had underestimated how fast Florida homes lose heat. I started setting my thermostat at 65°F even overnight, which made a noticeable difference. Also, protecting pipes became a top priority. I found letting faucets drip continuously, especially those on exterior walls, effectively reduced the risk of pipes freezing and bursting. Opening cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation was something I hadn’t thought about before but proved essential during cold nights. Disconnecting and draining outdoor hoses also saved me a headache, as leaving them connected risks freezing water inside and damaging the connections. Covering outdoor spigots further protected plumbing externally. Lastly, knowing exactly where the main water shutoff valve is gave me peace of mind in case something went wrong. Quick action can prevent costly repairs and water damage. These straightforward precautions turned my experience from stressful to manageable. If you’re new to Florida or just unprepared for cold weather, taking these steps ensures your Florida home and belongings stay safe. It’s all about simple habits and small investments that save significant expense and frustration later. Stay warm and enjoy Florida living without worries during those unexpected chilly days!
