Hey fellow ROTTNMT fans and artists! I know the joy of bringing your own original human characters (OCs) into the vibrant world of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's such a unique universe with its own blend of humor, mysticism, and action, making it a fantastic playground for creativity. I've been diving deep into designing my own ROTTNMT human OCs, and I wanted to share some thoughts and tips on how I approach creating characters that truly feel at home in this setting. When I think about my ROTTNMT human OCs, the first thing I consider is their connection to the turtles. Do they have a personal history with one of the brothers? Are they a new friend, a rival, or perhaps someone who stumbled upon their secret? For instance, with one of my characters, I imagined a scenario where a human in a 'purple hoodie' (like the one I drew with Donatello!) might be a tech enthusiast who crosses paths with Donnie, leading to some fun, chaotic adventures. Thinking about these interactions helps sculpt their personality and purpose. Another big aspect is their design. ROTTNMT has such a distinctive art style – dynamic, expressive, and full of personality. When designing my human OCs, I try to capture that energy. What kind of clothing would they wear that reflects their personality but also fits the show's aesthetic? Do they have any unique accessories or features? For example, I’ve played with ideas for characters with distinct physical traits, like the 'cartoon character with dark skin, black hair, and large purple wings' mentioned in my art dump – imagining how those elements would fit into the ROTTNMT lore, perhaps as a mutant human or someone with a mystic connection. It's all about making them visually interesting while staying true to the show's vibe. Developing a compelling backstory for your ROTTNMT human OC is also crucial. What's their life like outside of encountering the turtles? What are their strengths, weaknesses, and motivations? Are they a student, an aspiring artist, a street performer, or perhaps someone with a hidden talent? The 'Casey Jones' character sheets I sketched are a great example of a human character with a clear role and personality within the TMNT universe, even if he's not an OC. He’s a relatable human who gets caught up in the turtles' world, and that's a fantastic template for building your own. Finally, integrating your human OCs into the ROTTNMT narrative doesn't always mean giving them superpowers or making them a main character. Sometimes, the most interesting OCs are those who provide a fresh perspective, offer comedic relief, or simply act as a grounding force for the turtles. Think about how their unique skills or personality traits could complement the existing cast. The goal is to create a character that enhances the ROTTNMT experience for both you and other fans.
