... Read moreHey bookworms! So glad you stopped by to check out my red and black book stack challenge. It was so much fun putting together that dark aesthetic flat lay, and I got some great questions about how to create a similar vibe for your own bookish displays. If you’re looking to dive deeper into the gothic bookish display world or just want to up your book photography game, here are some of my go-to tips! First off, for that perfect red and black stack, it's not just about the covers, though that's a huge part of it! Think about the mood you want to convey. For my stack, I leaned into a darker, more gothic feel. When you’re picking books, consider both their cover art and their genre. Dark fantasy, gothic romance, and psychological thrillers often come with covers that fit this aesthetic perfectly. Don't be afraid to mix hardcovers and paperbacks for varied textures, and remember to angle them slightly for visual interest, rather than just stacking them straight. Now, for the props that really bring a dark aesthetic flat lay to life. As you might have seen in my picture, I love incorporating elements that tell a story. Red and black roses are a must for that touch of romance and drama. They instantly elevate the 'gothic' feel. Candles – especially dark-colored or deep red ones – add a moody ambiance, perfect for capturing that shadowy effect in photos. And for something a little unexpected? A small dagger or a piece of ornate jewelry can add a mysterious, almost dangerous, edge. I also adore using a white bust or a small ornate mirror; they add a classical, antique touch that really complements a gothic display and helps reflect light in interesting ways. Don't be shy about experimenting with different textures in your background too, like velvet cloths or weathered wood. When it comes to book photography, lighting is everything for a dark aesthetic. I usually prefer natural, diffused light, but for a gothic mood, sometimes a bit of shadow play can be even more effective. Try shooting near a window on an overcast day, or in the late afternoon for softer light. Don't be afraid to play with angles and close-ups to highlight specific details, like a gilded page edge or the texture of a book cover. And speaking of books, if you enjoyed the titles in my red and black stack, you might also love exploring authors who consistently deliver on that dark fantasy or gothic vibe. Think V.E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, or even some classic Edgar Allan Poe for that ultimate gothic immersion. There’s a whole world of stories out there waiting to be discovered that fit this dramatic aesthetic. Finally, let's circle back to the question I asked in my original post: now that we’re getting closer to the end of 2025, what’s the BEST (or worst 👀) book you’ve read so far this year? I’m genuinely curious to hear what you all have been diving into. Sometimes the worst reads are the most memorable, right? Sharing our reading experiences is one of my favorite parts of being in this bookish community! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below, and happy reading!
