Flying from Pittsburgh to Budapest

First leg: PIT -> IAD.

I get a text that my flight is delayed.

Connection will be missed. I get rebooked to Munich. Then my flight gets delayed again.

When I land in DC, my original flight to Frankfurt was delayed, so I am rebooked on it.

I go to the Frankfurt gate. They tell me I can’t board because my checked bag wasn’t loaded. They tell me to leave the gate and retrieve my bag.

I go to baggage. They say they can’t give me my bag and it’ll take 4 hours to retrieve it.

They tell me to rebook and “it’ll be on the next flight.”

Back to United help desk. Initially they tell me the next available flight is January 2nd.

I ask about partner airlines (good tip if you are ever in this kind of situation where nothing is available). After some time, they say there is something with Turkish Airlines that would arrive in BUD before NYE. They send me to Turkish Airlines.

I spent 1.5 hours at Turkish Airlines counter.

They rebook me to Istanbul. But then they tell me I have to pay for my bag again… $195 for ONE bag. At this point I don’t even care anymore. I just want to arrive.

IAD -> IST.

Beautiful flight. Beautiful airline. Beautiful airport.

Finally.

IST -> BUD.

I arrive 7 hours late. Original time was supposed to be 11am. No fault of Turkish airlines. I make it to the baggage area and my bag doesn’t come out of the carousel. Lost baggage desk says they don’t know where my baggage is. They think it’s “probably in Turkey.”

Later update:

Bag was actually left in Washington DC. It took 3 full days to reach me.

Just to add salt to the wound.

On the way home, my brand new suitcase (Christmas gift) got damaged too.

I normally love United and Star Alliance…

but this trip was built different. Still worth it thought. #united #travel #budapest

Pittsburgh International Airport
1/23 Edited to

... Read moreMy recent trip from Washington D.C. to Budapest definitely turned into my craziest flight experience to date! While the original story detailed the chaos, I learned some invaluable lessons that I want to share so your journey to Budapest can be much smoother. Even with the best planning, travel can throw curveballs, but a few smart strategies can make all the difference. First, let's talk about choosing your flights from D.C. (typically Dulles, IAD, for international travel) to Budapest (BUD). Direct flights are rare, so you’ll almost certainly have a layover. Common connecting hubs include major European cities like Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Istanbul (IST), Amsterdam (AMS), Paris (CDG), or London (LHR). Airlines like United, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, KLM, Air France, and British Airways frequently operate these routes. When booking, always compare prices across different platforms, but also pay close attention to layover times. A layover that's too short (less than 1.5-2 hours, especially if it requires switching terminals or airlines) is a recipe for disaster, as I unfortunately discovered! Conversely, an overly long layover can be exhausting. Preparation is key for international travel, especially for a long-haul flight to Europe. I cannot stress enough the importance of travel insurance. It might seem like an extra cost, but in situations like mine, where flights are delayed, bags are lost, or plans completely unravel, it can be a lifesaver for recouping expenses. Additionally, pack essentials in your carry-on: a change of clothes, any vital medications, important documents, and anything you absolutely can't live without for a few days. My luggage was eventually found, but having some basics in my carry-on would have eased the stress. When disruptions occur, like my flight delays and rebookings, staying calm and being proactive are your best tools. The author's tip about asking about partner airlines is golden! Don't just accept the first rebooking option if it's unfavorable; politely but firmly inquire about alternatives, especially with alliance partners (like Star Alliance, which United and Turkish Airlines are part of). Also, download your airline's app – they often provide real-time updates faster than gate agents or airport screens. Knowing your passenger rights, particularly for flights to or from the EU (like EU261 regulations), can also empower you to advocate for yourself. Finally, dealing with lost luggage. It’s incredibly frustrating. If your bag doesn't appear on the carousel, go immediately to the airline's baggage claim desk or lost and found. File a detailed report, get a reference number, and ensure they have accurate contact information. It's helpful to have a photo of your bag and a general idea of its contents. While my bag took three days to reach me from Washington D.C. to Budapest, the good news is that most lost luggage is eventually recovered. For extra peace of mind, consider a luggage tracker. Despite my unbelievable journey, Budapest was absolutely worth it, and with these tips, I hope your trip will be a seamless adventure!
