tips for visiting Budapest

2024/3/11 Edited to

... Read moreAfter my recent trip to Budapest, I realized there's so much more to this city than meets the eye! I wanted to share some deeper insights and personal recommendations that truly made my visit special, almost like having a local friend guiding you around. First off, getting around couldn't be easier with the Budapest Go app. Seriously, download it immediately! I found it super handy for planning routes to places like the Parliament Building along the Danube or crossing the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge. You can buy tickets right in the app, which saves so much time and fumbling with cash at ticket machines. I loved taking the tram along the river – the views of the cityscape, especially at sunset, are absolutely breathtaking. Don't forget valid tickets, inspectors are common! Another tip I picked up was trying to learn a few basic Hungarian phrases. Even just 'hello' (szia), 'thank you' (köszönöm), and 'please' (kérem) goes a long way. The locals really appreciate the effort, and it often led to warmer interactions, especially in smaller shops or cafes off the main tourist routes. It felt like unlocking a small secret door to the culture. When it comes to exploring historical sites, you absolutely don't need to pay for every tour. I spent a fantastic afternoon just wandering around Buda Castle, taking in the magnificent architecture and panoramic views. There are plenty of free walking tours that cover the highlights of the castle district and Pest side, giving you the historical context without breaking the bank. I particularly enjoyed finding the less crowded viewpoints overlooking the Danube. Money matters can be tricky, but getting used to the Hungarian Forint (HUF) is key. Always check the current exchange rate before you go, and be wary of exchange offices with unusually good rates – they often have hidden fees. I found using ATMs from reputable banks (like OTP or Raiffeisen) to withdraw cash was generally the best option, just make sure your bank doesn't charge high international fees. Many places accept card payments, but it's always good to have some smaller denominations of Forint for street food or local markets, like the Great Market Hall. If you're traveling solo or just love meeting new people, don't underestimate hostel social events. Even if you're not staying in a hostel, some might have public events or pub crawls you can join. I joined one and ended up meeting a fantastic group of travelers, which led to exploring some amazing ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter that I might never have found on my own. It's a great way to get local recommendations and share travel stories. Beyond the well-known sights, try to wander into some of Budapest's charming inner courtyards or discover a hidden gem like the 'Garden of Philosophers' for a peaceful escape. The city truly comes alive after dark, so definitely experience the illuminated Parliament Building and the Chain Bridge at night. It's a completely different vibe! My time in Budapest felt so enriched by these little discoveries and practical tips, and I hope they help you have an equally amazing trip!
