If I had $$$, here’s how I’d finish my basement ✨

I’ve been dreaming of finishing our basement since we moved in 2 years ago, BUT money is a huge factor to why we haven’t gotten it done. Plumbing for a bathroom and moving all our hvac around have slowed the process and I’m not sure when we’ll ever get it done!

I’d love to have a fully new basement with everything upgraded and also me being able to diy some of the furniture. I love finding vintage pieces or cheap pieces that I can make into something special and beautiful for our home ❤️

While our basement does work for our needs right now and we literally have no budget to spend on it, I’ve found to find joy in what we already have! We’re so lucky to even have a basement we can use and to have our upstairs be a remodeled space. Maybe one day I’ll be able to finish the basement to my dream basement! But what we have right now is absolutely fine 🫶

... Read moreIt's so relatable to dream big about a basement remodel, especially when you're envisioning transforming a raw, utilitarian space into something truly special! My own basement has its challenges, and I often find myself thinking about all the practical hurdles that come with upgrading. One of the biggest considerations, which often pops up when planning a layout, involves those crucial basement support posts. They might seem like obstacles, but with a little creativity, they can actually be integrated beautifully into your design. For instance, instead of seeing a bare metal pole, I’ve seen amazing transformations where homeowners box them in with drywall and trim, turning them into decorative columns. Or, even better, you can integrate them into built-in shelving units or a custom entertainment center, making them functional rather than just structural. It’s all about working with what you have and making it part of the aesthetic. Of course, any structural changes, like moving or altering a load-bearing post, would absolutely require consulting with an engineer – safety first! The OCR images of my dream laundry area and living space makeover really highlight the importance of tackling the guts of the basement, like exposed pipes and HVAC. I know for my own project, moving HVAC ducts and rerouting plumbing for a new bathroom are huge undertakings, but totally worth it for a seamless look. Imagine tucking away those unsightly pipes behind a clever bulkhead or incorporating a dropped ceiling in certain areas to conceal ductwork without sacrificing too much head height. For the laundry, a stacked washer/dryer unit is a game-changer for space, and planning the plumbing for that new vanity and glass shower is key to creating a truly comfortable and functional space. Then there’s the foundation – literally! My concrete floor needs attention, as mentioned in the OCR. Patching and leveling are crucial before laying down any new flooring. For a cozy finished basement, I’m always dreaming of full carpeting, but there are so many great options, like luxury vinyl plank over a subfloor, which offers warmth and water resistance. And those bare concrete walls? Drywalling them instantly transforms the feel, making the space feel less like a utility area and more like an extension of your home. Adding proper insulation behind the drywall is also a must for comfort and energy efficiency. Thinking about the future, having egress windows is not just about safety (which is paramount!) but also about bringing in natural light and making the space feel less like a dungeon. If you’re dreaming of a separate entrance, as my plans show, egress windows are non-negotiable and add so much value. Even if a full basement remodel isn’t in the immediate budget, focusing on these structural and foundational elements first can set you up for success. My advice, based on my own aspirations, is to phase it out. Maybe tackle the plumbing and electrical rough-ins first, then drywall, and finally the finishes. It makes the dream feel more achievable, one step at a time. It’s all about creating a space that’s not just beautiful, but also safe, functional, and truly a part of your home.
