🌿 Before it became a peaceful escape filled with rare plants, butterflies, and shady hammock trails, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park was almost turned into a massive luxury development. 😳
Back in the 1970s, plans were underway for condos, marinas, hotels, and even a golf course right in the middle of one of the Florida Keys’ rarest ecosystems.
But local environmental activist Dagny Johnson fought to protect the land and helped save thousands of acres of tropical hardwood hammock from destruction. 💚
Today, the park protects endangered wildlife, rare tropical trees, and one of the last remaining wild hammocks in the continental United States 🌴🦋🐊
Next time you walk those trails, you’re literally walking through a piece of preserved Florida Keys history.

Visiting Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park offers a unique opportunity to connect deeply with nature and history simultaneously. As someone who’s walked these peaceful trails, I can attest to the incredible feeling of walking through one of Florida’s last remaining tropical hardwood hammocks—a rare ecosystem that once faced destruction. The phrase “NATURE WON.” truly captures the spirit of this park. It’s inspiring to consider how community activism prevented a massive luxury development, preserving thousands of acres for future generations. The diversity of plant life, including rare trees unique to the Florida Keys, creates a lush environment where butterflies flutter gracefully and wildlife like alligators find sanctuary. One of my favorite experiences there is lounging in the shady hammock trails, where you can immerse yourself in the soothing sounds of wildlife and feel the gentle sway of hammocks strung up under the canopy. For nature lovers, it’s a peaceful escape and a living reminder of the importance of environmental protection. I encourage visitors to take guided tours if available or simply explore the trails at their own pace. Remember to bring insect repellent and plenty of water, especially during the warmer months, to fully enjoy your walk without distractions. Also, keep an eye out for educational signage that tells the story of Dagny Johnson’s activism and the ecological significance of the park. This park is truly a gem of the Florida Keys, combining natural beauty with an important conservation legacy. Whenever I leave, I feel a renewed appreciation for the efforts taken to ensure such places are protected. Whether you’re into hiking, photography, bird watching, or simply finding a quiet spot to relax, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park offers a memorable experience steeped in nature and history.
