Harvesting

2/24 Edited to

... Read moreAfter harvesting herbs, the next steps are crucial to preserve their flavors and benefits. From my own experience, one of the best ways to keep herbs fresh is to start by cleaning them gently to remove any dirt or insects. It’s important not to wash them until you’re ready to use or dry them, as excess moisture can lead to mold. For drying, hanging small bunches upside down in a well-ventilated, dry area works well. I’ve also experimented with using a simple indoor aerogarden setup designed for herbs—which allows for controlled airflow and light—helping herbs to dry evenly without turning brittle. Using the OCR clues like "AeroGorden" and "roGarden," I found that modern indoor garden devices can assist not only in growth but also in processing herbs post-harvest. Once herbs are completely dry, I store them in airtight containers away from direct sunlight. Labeling each container with the herb name and date helps keep track of freshness. Some gardeners prefer freezing herbs in ice cube trays with olive oil to lock in freshness for cooking. If you want to use herbs fresh, trimming the stems and placing them in a jar with water on the countertop extends their life for a few days. This is handy for commonly used herbs like basil and parsley. In my personal gardening journey, understanding what comes after harvesting – cleaning, drying, and storing – has transformed how I enjoy my garden’s bounty year-round. I recommend experimenting with these methods to find what fits best with your gardening style and kitchen needs.
