my natural hair journey!

some context: the last time I tried to start my natural hair journey was during quarantine. unfortunately, I didn't have the patience to learn all the trials and errors that came with walking that road, so I went back to relaxing. i have been relaxing my hair basically all my life up until this point.

I started this journey again just wanting to reset for the new year. my hair wasn't growing the way i really wanted, as I had constant breakage and a ton of split ends (as you can see). not to mention it was just getting irritating and difficult to manage/style my hair with two DRASTICALLY different textures. and the worst part? probably the HUNDREDS i spent getting braids done for the year just for the growth to be stunted by heat damage, over-manipulation, and not even using a bonnet before bed most nights.

so I said f*ck it and just cut off all that dead weight.

I think the biggest surprise of this journey has been the emotional (maybe even spiritual?) connection i've made with my hair. If I skip wash day for an extended period of time, it's like all my inner demons and bad thoughts cling to the strands and weighs me down like nothing I've ever felt before. it's wild, do any of you ever feel this way? let me know in the comments!

I'll make another post about what products I've been using to get to this point. I'm happy with the results so far, and I can't wait to see what it looks like in another 3 months from now. thanks for reading!

... Read moreThe journey to embracing natural hair is often filled with emotional and practical challenges. Many individuals face frustrations such as breakage, split ends, and managing different textures. It's common to experience a deep emotional connection to one's hair; many find that neglecting their hair care routine can affect their mental well-being. Common issues like heat damage and over-manipulation are challenges faced by those transitioning from relaxed to natural styles. Cutting off damaged ends, also known as 'the big chop,' can be a liberating step towards healthy hair growth. Additionally, understanding the right products and care routines is crucial for a successful natural hair journey. Popular product lines focused on hydration and nourishment for natural textures can greatly assist in this process. As more people document their personal journeys, sharing tips and tricks can create a supportive community. Engaging with various hair care practices, including protective styles and regular trims, can prevent further damage and enhance growth. Establishing a consistent washing and moisturizing regimen is vital for maintaining healthy hair and preventing issues like dry scalp and breakage. Many resources are available online, including tutorials and community forums, that provide insights and support for those undergoing similar transitions. Sharing your own experiences, product recommendations, and emotional hurdles can not only empower you but also inspire others in the community to embrace their natural hair journey.
