... Read moreStarting your garden early in Zone 6a can make a huge difference in your harvest. From my experience, planting seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost allows seedlings to mature and gives you a jumpstart on the growing season. I like to use a grow light to mimic sunlight, which keeps my seedlings healthy and prevents them from becoming leggy. Some of my favorite vegetables to start indoors include spinach and lettuce, which germinate quickly and tolerate cooler temperatures well. Sunflowers are also fun to start early because they grow fast and can brighten up any garden space. Onions are a great choice too, as starting them indoors means you’ll have larger bulbs when it’s time to transplant them outside. It's important to keep the soil moist but not soggy and to provide good airflow around your seedlings to prevent mold. Using seed trays or small pots makes it easy to manage individual seedlings and helps with transplanting later on. I also recommend labeling your seed varieties to keep track of what’s growing. For anyone in Zone 6a looking to save money and get quality plants, keep an eye out for local plant nursery preorders. They can be a great resource if you’d rather skip starting seeds from scratch. However, growing your own plants indoors is deeply satisfying and helps ensure you know exactly what goes into your garden. Happy planting!
