What happens when you know God intimately?

... Read moreWhen I first heard about 'knowing God intimately,' I pictured something lofty and complex, maybe even a bit intimidating. But through my own journey, I've realized it's far simpler, yet profoundly transformative. It's not about becoming 'super spiritual' or following a rigid set of rules. Instead, it's about becoming 'really human,' just as God intended. It means having an ongoing, personal relationship, like with your closest friend or family member, where you truly get each other. It’s about listening, understanding, trusting, and allowing that divine connection to shape your inner world. This intimacy naturally overflows into our daily lives, shaping how we interact with the world around us. One of the most beautiful outcomes I've experienced is a profound shift in my capacity for kindness and *empathy*. It's a reflection of what Jesus taught: loving God with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself. When you understand God's heart for humanity, particularly for 'people that are hurting,' you can't help but feel a pull to respond with compassion. This deeper connection also brings an incredible sense of inner peace and the ability to be truly *forgiving*. It’s like a wellspring of grace within you, making you more gentle with yourself and with others, even when faced with challenges. I've found myself far more able to 'relate to people that are hurting,' not just with sympathy, but with genuine understanding and a desire to uplift. If you're wondering how to cultivate this intimacy, the Bible is a treasure trove of guidance. Though I'm still learning, these verses have been foundational for me: Jeremiah 29:13 reminds us, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." John 17:3 reveals, "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." And Psalm 46:10 encourages us to "Be still, and know that I am God." Perhaps one of the most impactful is found in 1 John 4:7-8, which says, "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." These scriptures remind me that knowing God isn't just an intellectual exercise; it's a relational journey that transforms our hearts and actions, directly influencing our ability to love others. So, what does this look like in daily life? It's often simple acts of faith and presence. For me, it involves setting aside time for prayer that isn't just about asking, but about listening. It means reflectively reading scripture, looking for insights into God's character. It's acknowledging God in everyday moments, practicing gratitude, and consciously seeking opportunities to serve others. Think of it as nurturing any relationship – consistent communication, spending quality time, and always being open to grow. It’s a lifelong journey, and every step deeper into knowing God intimately brings us closer to being the *really human*, loving individuals He created us to be.
