Your $30,000 China import actually costs $50,000 💸

Most small buyers only calculate the factory price and the freight quote.

Then the shipment lands, and the real bill shows up — duty, VAT, port handling, last-mile, warehouse fees.

That's how 30K turns into 50K. And that's how profit quietly disappears before the goods even hit the shelf.

The number that actually matters isn't the product price. It's the full landed cost.

📌 Save this for your next order.

💬 Drop your product + country, I'll break down what your real cost would look like.

... Read moreWhen I first started importing goods from China to Europe, I thought the biggest expense was simply the factory price plus the freight charges. However, after my first few shipments, I quickly realized there are multiple hidden costs that dramatically increase the total landed cost. For example, in one of my shipments valued at around $30,000, once the goods arrived, I had to pay customs duty, which was roughly 8% of the product cost, adding about $2,400. On top of that came the VAT, which in Romania is 21%, meaning I owed around $6,000 more before I even took delivery. Beyond duties and VAT, there are also port handling fees, which in my case added over 1,100 euros, plus last-mile transportation to my warehouse and additional warehouse handling for unloading, sorting, and labeling. These add-ons combined pushed my actual landed cost closer to $50,000. One important tip I’ve learned is to always get a live quote for freight because shipping rates fluctuate with the market. Another eye-opener was how underestimated customs fees can be—the paperwork, inspections, and tariffs all add up. By knowing the full landed cost, not just the factory price or initial freight quote, I can build more accurate pricing models and ensure my profit margins aren't swallowed up unexpectedly. It’s crucial for small businesses importing from China to Europe to take these factors seriously—otherwise, profit disappears before the goods ever hit the shelves. So next time you plan an import, tally up all these costs first: factory, freight, customs duty, VAT, port handling, last-mile delivery, and warehouse fees. This approach saved me from unpleasant surprises and helped me price my products properly to stay profitable.
