RV FLIP was built in 1962 by

The reason why it was created:

To solve the problem of "general ships are not stationary enough" for the research work on underwater noise and deep sea waves, which is important both scientific and strategic information of the military.

Because the ocean waves make the stabilizer ship hard → research data distorted.

Scientists therefore want a "research platform that is as stationary as a building but floats in the middle of the sea."

And that spawned a crazy idea that became legendary:

Build a standing ship!

⚙️. The ultimate flip mechanism.

RV FLIP has a total length of 108 meters.

By the stern span is a cylindrical tube more than 90 meters long.

🛠 How to work

1. In normal mode: float horizontally like a normal boat.

2. When starting "flip":

Open the valve for a trailing flow of seawater.

Gradually, the stern sank almost as deep as possible.

The boat header is raised perpendicular to the surface of the water.

3. When in upright mode:

Most of the structures are submerged under the waves.

The ship is therefore stationary like an oil rig.

It has almost no effect on the force of the wind and waves above.

This stillness made RV FLIP reputedly

"The stagnant ship in the world."

When the ship stands up, it becomes an extreme stable marine laboratory, used for global tasks such as
