my oc w/ hanahaki 🪻🪼

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a deeper dive into the inspiration behind my latest artwork, especially for those curious about Hanahaki Disease. For the uninitiated, Hanahaki Disease is a fictional ailment born from unrequited love, where the sufferer literally coughs up flower petals until their love is returned, or they die. It's such a powerful metaphor for the overwhelming pain of longing. When I decided to create this piece, I really wanted to explore the emotional depth of Hanahaki through my own original character (OC). Seeing my OC with those vivid blue rose petals emerging from their mouth and hands, as depicted in the illustration, truly emphasized the deep sadness and quiet despair of their situation. I specifically chose blue rose petals because blue often symbolizes mystery, the unattainable, or even profound sorrow, which felt perfectly suited for a love that cannot be reciprocated. My character's blue hair was a deliberate choice to further tie into this melancholic aesthetic, making the entire visual narrative cohesive. I really focused on capturing the raw emotion in my character's expression—the tears and the overall dark blue setting in the background weren't just aesthetic choices; they were crucial for setting the mood and conveying the intensity of their suffering. And those glowing elements, like the blue jellyfish and purple flower floating above the character? They were meant to add a surreal, almost dreamlike quality to the pain, as if nature itself is weeping alongside the character, enhancing the tragic beauty of the scene. I often use programs like Clip Studio Paint Pro for these digital creations, as it gives me so much flexibility to blend colors and create these atmospheric effects.
