Today we brought fall fun into therapy 🎃

✨ Fall fun meets therapy! 🎃 Today in OT we used pumpkin carving to help my little client explore new textures, build fine motor skills, and boost confidence—all while creating the cutest Jack-o’-lantern. 🍂 Activities like this show how play can be powerful in overcoming sensory aversions and supporting growth. 💪🧡 Big shout out to Birth to Three for having such amazing therapists!

... Read moreIncorporating pumpkin carving into occupational therapy sessions offers a unique and engaging way to promote sensory processing and motor skill growth in children, especially those experiencing sensory delays. Pumpkins provide a rich sensory experience—from feeling the smooth outer skin to digging through the slimy innards and smelling the fresh pumpkin scent—which helps children gradually build tolerance and overcome sensory aversions in a controlled, fun environment. Using child-safe carving tools and professional guidance ensures safety while encouraging children to practice precise hand movements required for pulling out eyes, noses, and mouths from the pumpkin. This activity is not only enjoyable but also targeted towards improving fine motor coordination, hand strength, and bilateral hand use, all crucial skills in pediatric occupational therapy. Beyond physical development, pumpkin carving encourages emotional growth by boosting self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment as children complete their own Jack-o’-lanterns. This positive reinforcement fosters a willingness to try new activities and enhances joy during therapy sessions. Integrating seasonal and imaginative play like pumpkin carving creates meaningful interventions that capture children’s interest and inspire creativity. It is a perfect example of how therapy can blend learning and play, making progress toward therapeutic goals feel like a celebration of fun rather than work. Occupational therapists, especially those working with the Birth to Three age group, recognize the importance of these experiential, tactile activities to support sensory integration and developmental milestones. If you’re a therapist or caregiver, consider introducing pumpkin carving or similar sensory-rich, Halloween-themed activities to your therapy toolbox this fall to enrich your approach and empower children through purposeful play.
