Read those labels!

2025/4/10 Edited to

... Read moreYou know that feeling when you're standing in the grocery aisle, squinting at a food label, and just wishing someone would give you a cheat sheet? I've been there countless times! It truly feels like you need a special degree to decode all the jargon and tiny print. While my previous post touched on the crucial differences between 'NON GMO Project' and 'USDA ORGANIC' – revealing that only the latter truly prohibits synthetic pesticides, Roundup, hexane, sewage sludge, antibiotics, and Ractopamine – there's so much more to uncover when you're trying to make truly healthy choices for yourself and your family. Beyond those certifications, I've learned that becoming a label detective means looking out for a few common culprits. My biggest revelation was understanding how sneaky 'added sugars' can be! They hide under so many names: high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, sucrose, corn syrup solids, fruit juice concentrate, and even seemingly innocent terms like 'organic cane sugar' (it's still added sugar!). A good rule of thumb I use is to look for products where sugar isn't one of the first three ingredients. Another big red flag for me are 'trans fats,' often listed as 'partially hydrogenated oils.' These are just bad news for your heart health, and thankfully, they're becoming less common, but it's still worth a quick check. Artificial sweeteners, colors, and preservatives are also on my 'avoid if possible' list. Things like aspartame, sucralose, Red 40, Yellow 5, BHA, and BHT don't add any nutritional value and can sometimes come with unwanted side effects. It's not just about what not to eat, though. It's also about understanding the basics of the nutrition facts panel. Always start with the 'serving size.' This is key, because all the other numbers – calories, fat, sodium – are based on one serving. If you eat two servings, you're getting double everything! I always compare the sodium content, aiming for lower numbers, and try to find foods higher in fiber and protein, which keep me feeling full and satisfied. Think of yourself as a detective with a mini food label reading worksheet. Here's my quick checklist: Check serving size & total calories. Am I eating more than one serving? **Scan the *ingredients list*. Is it short and recognizable? Does it contain ingredients I want to avoid (like those sneaky sugars or partially hydrogenated oils)? Look for fiber and protein. Are there good amounts to support my energy and digestion? Sodium smarts. Is the sodium content reasonable per serving? Be wary of marketing claims.** Just because a box says 'natural' or 'healthy' doesn't mean the ingredient list will support it! Always go straight to the facts. By taking a few extra seconds in the aisle, you empower yourself to make informed decisions. It’s not about perfection, but about continuous improvement and understanding what fuels your body best. Happy label reading!

Why it’s important to read labels 👀
My goal is to wake as many people up as possibe to look at what you’re putting into your body👇 Just because it looks healthy on the front doesn’t mean it actually is. For example - No sugar doesn’t mean it’s healthy if you look at the back and it’s full of chemicals to get that sweet taste.
