Being Queer during the holidays #letschat

Good morning from Texas!

Being queer during the holidays is the most stressful time of the year for me. And I also see it drain everything out of my partner. It breaks my heart that we have to be so very careful around each others families. For religious reasons or homophobic reasons.

If you’re a family inviting over your family members partner over please be respectful of pronouns if you can. The effort helps immensely. Or just call them by their name.

Some families are not okay with queer people. So if you don’t get invited or if there is an issue about you coming over. It’s okay. Be kind because they’ll have to live with that hate in their heart. Not you.

Support your queer in any way you can. No one likes being 100% alone or called out like that. Be an ally!

As a queer person we’ve decided to go about our family activities separately. But donating breakfast, or a side. We are there in spirit.

Remember take care of yourself. How are you getting through the holidays as a queer person?

... Read moreNavigating the holidays as a queer person can feel like walking on eggshells, right? I totally get it. After years of trying to fit into family expectations or tiptoeing around sensitive topics, my partner and I have learned a few things that have truly helped us protect our peace of mind during this season. It's more than just getting through it; it's about finding genuine joy and safety. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is the power of creating your own 'safe home' during the holidays. This doesn't always mean physically being somewhere else, but mentally preparing and having a solid support system. If you're an ally, your role is HUGE in making family gatherings feel like a true family dinner for everyone. Simple things like gently correcting someone on pronouns, or skillfully redirecting an uncomfortable conversation, make a world of difference. Remember those 'Queer Holiday Reminders' we often see? They're spot on about respecting pronouns and providing unwavering support – it's vital for our well-being. For those of us dealing with less-than-accepting family, setting clear boundaries beforehand is a game-changer. My partner and I now have a pre-holiday chat: what are our non-negotiables? What's our exit strategy if things get too much? It’s not about being rude; it’s about self-preservation. Sometimes, just knowing you have an out, like a pre-arranged 'emergency' call or a friend to text, can significantly reduce anxiety. This ties directly into protecting your peace of mind – you're not obligated to absorb negativity or tolerate disrespect just because it's 'family.' We've also found immense joy in creating our own 'found family' traditions. If traditional family gatherings feel draining, why not host a 'Friendsgiving' or a 'Queermas' brunch? It's about celebrating in a way that feels authentic and joyful to *you*. We often contribute a dish or breakfast to family gatherings even if we don't stay long, being 'there in spirit' but prioritizing our well-being. It’s a way to show respect while also respecting ourselves. And speaking of well-being, self-care during the holidays is non-negotiable. It’s not selfish; it’s essential. This could be anything from taking a quiet walk, listening to music, journaling, or even just having a designated 'decompression' time with your partner or a trusted friend after a family event. Think of the 'brain with a dove' icon from those reminders – it's all about fostering inner peace amidst external chaos. Remember, you deserve to feel safe, respected, and loved during the holidays, just like anyone else. Let's support each other in making these holidays a time of genuine connection and peace, whatever that looks like for you.
