Being Queer during the holidays #letschat

Good morning from Texas!

Being queer during the holidays is the most stressful time of the year for me. And I also see it drain everything out of my partner. It breaks my heart that we have to be so very careful around each others families. For religious reasons or homophobic reasons.

If you’re a family inviting over your family members partner over please be respectful of pronouns if you can. The effort helps immensely. Or just call them by their name.

Some families are not okay with queer people. So if you don’t get invited or if there is an issue about you coming over. It’s okay. Be kind because they’ll have to live with that hate in their heart. Not you.

Support your queer in any way you can. No one likes being 100% alone or called out like that. Be an ally!

As a queer person we’ve decided to go about our family activities separately. But donating breakfast, or a side. We are there in spirit.

Remember take care of yourself. How are you getting through the holidays as a queer person?

... Read moreHolidays can be particularly challenging for queer individuals, often leading to feelings of isolation and anxiety. It’s essential to acknowledge that many LGBTQ+ people may not have the support of their families during this festive season. This reinforces the importance of respect and understanding from both family members and allies. One critical aspect of supporting queer individuals is the recognition and use of correct pronouns. This respectful practice fosters an inclusive environment and can significantly impact the mental well-being of LGBTQ+ members. Beyond language, allies' actions during family gatherings—like affirming the identities of queer relatives—play a crucial role in providing emotional safety. For those feeling rejected by their families, it's okay to take alternative routes when celebrating holidays, such as hosting friends or getting involved in community activities. Establishing new traditions can provide a much-needed sense of belonging and joy. Encourage conversations around mental health as well; sharing experiences and coping strategies can be a powerful way to navigate these emotional landscapes together. Remember that it’s perfectly valid to prioritize your peace of mind and mental health, particularly in environments that may be hostile or unwelcoming. Lastly, connect with local queer organizations or online communities, which can be invaluable sources of support and camaraderie. Engaging with others who share similar experiences fosters resilience and reminds us that we are not alone, enhancing the overall experience of what the holidays can mean for queer individuals.
