Easy to Grow Climbing Roses

My gardening journey really blossomed when I discovered climbing roses. Like many of you, I initially wondered if I had the green thumb for something so beautiful and seemingly complex. But I’m here to tell you, growing climbing roses can be incredibly rewarding and simpler than you think, especially if you follow a few key steps! From my experience, success begins with the right location. Climbing roses thrive on at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Good drainage is also crucial. When preparing the soil, I always amend it with plenty of organic matter – compost or well-rotted manure works wonders to enrich it and improve drainage. Dig a hole that’s wide enough to accommodate the roots comfortably, about twice the width of the root ball, and just as deep. Carefully place your rose, ensuring the graft union (the knobby part where the rose was budded) is about an inch or two below the soil line in colder climates, or at soil level in milder ones. Fill the hole gently, firming the soil around the base to eliminate air pockets, and then water thoroughly. I’ve found that leading the canes horizontally along a trellis, fence, or arbor encourages more flowering, as it stimulates lateral shoots. Rambling roses, on the other hand, usually have more flexible canes, bloom once a year in a spectacular flush, and can grow much larger, often scrambling through trees or over large structures. For a structured garden look, or for continuous blooms, a true climbing rose is usually the better choice. For a wilder, more expansive display, a rambler might be perfect. If you notice sparse leaves, yellowing, or spots, it’s often a sign to check for pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies.
