I was a young Black woman with PCOS who went looking for answers and came home with birth control.

Nobody explained why my periods were missing, what PCOS was doing to my body or what it could mean when I wanted to become a mother. I was given something to control the bleeding and told to come back later if getting pregnant became a problem.

I did not know what I was supposed to ask.

Maybe that is where you are now. You know the prescription did not answer your real question, but you are still unsure what that conversation should have included instead.

Because controlling when you bleed is not the same as understanding why your cycles stretch forty-five, sixty or ninety days, whether the positive OPK, spotting and timing of your next bleed are even telling the same story, or what seems to happen in the days after the suspected surge.

Years later, I became a nurse and spent more than fifteen years in high-risk care, including NICU and Labor and Delivery.

I learned how much timing mattered and what happened when the information in front of us did not match.

Then I lost my first baby at six months pregnant.

One day, I was the nurse who understood the language and advocated for everyone else.

The next, I was the woman leaving without my baby, being told my labs were normal and that I could try again.

Try again with what information?

“Normal” did not explain what happened, and it did not make me feel safe enough to trust my body with another pregnancy.

That experience changed the way I saw everything women carry home after the appointment: the spotting, the missing period, the positive OPK and the symptom that seems insignificant until someone places it beside the rest of the cycle.

That missing conversation became Love Served Warm, where more than 150,000 women have gathered because they are tired of receiving fertility answers in pieces.

I know what it feels like when everyone else considers the appointment finished, but you are still carrying the questions into your bathroom, your marriage and the next pregnancy test.

Send this to the woman who received something to control her symptoms but never received an explanation of her body.

... Read moreLiving with PCOS can often feel like receiving fragmented information, especially when healthcare providers focus solely on symptom management instead of explanation. I remember facing similar frustration—being handed birth control pills without a clear understanding of what PCOS truly meant for my body or my future plans for pregnancy. One pivotal aspect often missed is the variability in menstrual cycles. For women with PCOS, cycles can stretch 45 to 90 days, making it confusing to interpret ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) or spotting patterns. Over time, I learned that these signs don't always sync up, which can lead to uncertainty and doubt about fertility and overall health. From personal experience, timing and comprehensive insight are essential. I spent years in high-risk nursing, which deepened my understanding of how hormonal irregularities impact pregnancy outcomes. Unfortunately, even with normal lab results, trust in one’s body can be shaken after pregnancy loss—something I painfully experienced myself. This journey inspired the creation of supportive communities where women share experiences, ask real questions, and find answers that go beyond prescriptions. Women with PCOS deserve to understand the 'why' behind their symptoms—not just the 'how to control' them. If you're navigating PCOS now, seek healthcare providers who acknowledge the complexity of your condition and support you in uncovering what your cycle and symptoms truly mean. Remember, managing PCOS is more than regulating bleeding—it's about empowering yourself with knowledge and community to advocate for your reproductive health confidently.

5 things I’m learning as a young black man
1. Identity vs. Image “Who I am inside vs. who the world thinks I should be.” A lot of us feel pressure to fit into a certain “look” or “vibe” to be accepted—whether that’s being “hard,” hyper-masculine, or emotionless. Learning to just be you without needing approval is hard but freeing. ⸻
