Hey everyone! As a fellow Dead by Daylight survivor, I've spent countless hours navigating the trials, and one aspect that often gets overlooked, but is incredibly powerful, is the strategic use of totems. While killers rely on Hex totems for their potent abilities, survivors can also create incredibly effective 'totem builds' that turn the tide in our favor. So, why bother with a totem build as a survivor? Well, for starters, cleansing Hex totems is crucial. Denying a killer their Ruin, Devour Hope, or Undying can massively impact the game's flow and give your team a huge advantage. Plus, with the introduction of Boon totems, survivors now have their own portable safe zones and utility buffs that can be game-changers. I’ve found that a well-placed Boon of Healing can save an entire match! When I'm crafting a totem build, I usually focus on a few key objectives: speed, information, and utility. For cleansing speed, perks like Inner Healing (formerly Inner Strength) are fantastic, allowing you to heal yourself instantly after cleansing a totem, which is a massive time-saver. Small Game is a classic for spotting totems, giving you an auditory cue when one is nearby – super helpful on maps where totems are well hidden. And for those moments when you need to pinpoint their exact location, Detective's Hunch reveals totems, chests, and generators after a generator is completed. I personally love pairing Inner Healing with Small Game; it feels so satisfying to quickly cleanse a hex, get a free heal, and deny the killer a crucial perk! Then there's the world of Boon totems. Circle of Healing is almost a must-have for team support, offering self-heal and faster healing for others in its radius. Shadow Step is amazing for stealth, suppressing scratch marks and aura readings within its range, making escapes much easier. Dark Theory gives a speed boost, which can be surprisingly useful for getting around the map or escaping chases. And for those clutch end-game plays, Exponential can provide instant recovery from dying, giving you a second chance. Setting up a Boon totem takes time, but the payoff can be huge, turning a dangerous area into a survivor sanctuary. My strategy often involves prioritizing Hex totems early in the game. Getting rid of perks like Hex: Ruin or Hex: Devour Hope quickly can prevent a snowball effect for the killer. However, it's not always about blindly cleansing. Sometimes, you're mid-cleanse and suddenly hear the killer's terror radius or see them approaching. This is where the 'CLEANSE TOTEM CANCEL' comes into play. Knowing when to stop your cleanse, move, and reposition is vital. It’s better to lose a few seconds of cleansing progress than to get caught and downed. I've learned this the hard way – nothing's worse than being hooked right next to a totem you almost finished! Balancing totem activities with generator progress and saving teammates is also key. A good totem build doesn't mean you ignore everything else. It means you're efficiently handling totems while contributing to the main objectives. For me, a great totem build often includes Inner Healing, Small Game, Circle of Healing, and then a flexible fourth slot like Lithe or Dead Hard for evasive maneuvers. This setup allows me to quickly deal with hexes, provide healing utility, and still have tools to survive chases. Ultimately, incorporating totem strategies into your survivor gameplay, whether it's through cleansing hexes or blessing boons, adds a whole new layer of depth and control to your matches. Give a totem build a try – you might be surprised how much it boosts your survival rate!
