Growing up, many of us face challenges tied to family experiences and expectations. In my journey, I was traumatized by being forced to wear heels from a young age, which made walking in them nerve-wracking. Despite attending therapy, I still felt uneasy until I decided to take a dedicated heels class. This focused practice helped me regain confidence step by step. The process of practicing wearing heels regularly transformed not only my physical balance but also my mental resilience. I found that consistent effort allowed me to appreciate the empowerment that can come from mastering something initially intimidating. It’s important to remember that healing and growth often require personal commitment beyond traditional therapy. Expressing identity through fashion also played a significant role. I noticed that certain styles—like those associated with Japanese gang culture—inspired me because of their boldness and defiance of norms. Combining this with my nonbinary identity and influences from the vibrant Miami dyke community helped shape a style that feels authentic and empowering. For anyone hesitant about heels or any aspect of self-expression, I encourage trying small, manageable steps like a class or a supportive group space. Fashion and movement can be powerful tools to reclaim personal narratives and build self-trust.
